    Pros

BlackBerry is an exciting place to work and still somewhat iconic in Canada. The people there are as passionate about BB as any place I've ever worked.

    Cons

Even with all the changes in the past few years, the culture is still broken. Anyone in a leadership role who has been there more than 8-10 years should be looked at as part of the problem, because there are still too many who aren't part of the solution. There is too much focus on short term achievement and not enough real leadership, despite the new top level that John Chen has brought in. In another couple years, if they keep cleaning house and focus on delivering what the customers want, it could be a good place to work. For now, stay away.

    Advice to Management

Keep cleaning house and don't buy into the nonsense that the technology requires the 10-15 year service employees to operate. Many of them are responsible for the mess. Remember, "you cannot solve a problem from within the same consciousness that created the problem".

    Pros

Met and worked with some very nice people. Good flexibility for work/life balance. Very, very dedicated people who wanted to see company improve.

    Cons

Horrible culture. Nobody talked to each other. Everyone stays in their own bubble. Too much worry about layoffs and expectations whether company would survive.

    Advice to Management

Step up and meet with your people more often. Stop trying to impress YOUR superior whilst your team suffers in silence.

    Pros

Salaries haven't dropped. Benefits are more or less untouched.

    Cons

Massive brain drain happening at both the manager and worker bee level. Extremely ineffective attempts at restructuring internally. Middle management that's left simply isn't up to the job of trying to effectively steer their bits of the company in the direction that upper management is looking for to revive the business. Serious communication issues abound.

    Advice to Management

When you communicate your goals engage your workers...listen to their feedback to move the goals forward...give them the resources and support to do so. New policies and procedures won't save you...your workers will.

    Pros

It was a good paying job and the office culture was something to strive for in other jobs. Great coworkers, its a shame that their talent is wasted on a dead company.

    Cons

No one would listen to any ideas even though the department in charge of ideas would bring up several new ideas that were viable for development.

    Pros

Ample opportunities to learn but you have to initiate on every level. If you have the gumption to go out and ask questions OR pick up a device and load the latest software and put serious time against it to figure out what is happening behind the scenes then you will begin to understand the magnitude of projects that you can involve yourself in.

The company has good benefits, gives you a mobile device, allows you to use it personally (although I never felt very comfortable with that policy).

    Cons

To me, it isn't a company. It's a place with a name that had some history and meant something once.

I sound like the media but actually my issue isn't with the technical side of the place - I think technically speaking it was and is a sound place.

My issue is with how people are treated there today. The people who should be ambassadors of BlackBerry but who clearly are not. The people who build the character and culture of the place which is at the lowest point that I have ever witnessed.

The people who get things done, sometimes as a team and all too frequently as individuals and the people who have been left unchecked - literally dozens of people whose output is questionable or at best extremely well hidden because I have never seen any deliverable from them for literally months and months on end but who consistently disrupt meetings.

The people who allow the difficult things to remain difficult - a director in development, a manager in testing, team members who don't communicate, non-existent project managers, VPs who allocate the wrong people to projects time and again .

The people who accept that "things may be terrible but sometimes there's nothing more that can be done except to leave" - someone in HR.

    Advice to Management

Get up out of your chair, get out of the airport, get off the conference call, put on some good walking shoes and walk around the company buildings. Listen and look and watch how things are going on inside the place.

    I dare you.
