I have been working at BlackBerry full-time for more than 8 years

    Pros

Ample opportunities to learn but you have to initiate on every level. If you have the gumption to go out and ask questions OR pick up a device and load the latest software and put serious time against it to figure out what is happening behind the scenes then you will begin to understand the magnitude of projects that you can involve yourself in.

The company has good benefits, gives you a mobile device, allows you to use it personally (although I never felt very comfortable with that policy).

    Cons

To me, it isn't a company. It's a place with a name that had some history and meant something once.

I sound like the media but actually my issue isn't with the technical side of the place - I think technically speaking it was and is a sound place.

My issue is with how people are treated there today. The people who should be ambassadors of BlackBerry but who clearly are not. The people who build the character and culture of the place which is at the lowest point that I have ever witnessed.

The people who get things done, sometimes as a team and all too frequently as individuals and the people who have been left unchecked - literally dozens of people whose output is questionable or at best extremely well hidden because I have never seen any deliverable from them for literally months and months on end but who consistently disrupt meetings.

The people who allow the difficult things to remain difficult - a director in development, a manager in testing, team members who don't communicate, non-existent project managers, VPs who allocate the wrong people to projects time and again .

The people who accept that "things may be terrible but sometimes there's nothing more that can be done except to leave" - someone in HR.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Get up out of your chair, get out of the airport, get off the conference call, put on some good walking shoes and walk around the company buildings. Listen and look and watch how things are going on inside the place.

    I dare you.

I have been working at BlackBerry full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Benefits are good. If you find the right people there is potential to learn. Working hours are flexible.

    Cons

Working from home is discouraged. Upper management is stifling lower workers with stupid rules and policies based on lack of trust. Salaries are NOT competitive despite what other reviews say - they mustn't know they're underpaid. No room for career growth unless you want to be a manager.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Start trusting your employees before it's too late.

I have been working at BlackBerry full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

The company provides comfortable working environment. It still has some great people left. Global company with many locations and "good" reputation.

    Cons

Career killer. My carrier and professional networking slowed to a crawl. There is no hi-tech culture/ feeling in the company. The management did not have a good handle on what is going on in the company. Maybe it will change now.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Value your employees. Develop them and keep them challenged. Improve your perks. Create a hi-tech culture.

I have been working at BlackBerry full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

They pay far more than most companies in the Waterloo Region and give generous vacation allotments.

    Cons

Most people are idiots with nothing but an associate's degree or certificate from Conestoga College. Complete chaos due to constant layoffs and reorgs. No one is motivated. People tend to be very unprofessional and dress badly.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Fire all the VPs and directors

I worked at BlackBerry as an intern for less than a year

    Pros

There were smart engineers at the company when I worked there. But there was also a massive brain drain to companies like Microsoft, Google and Apple. Really look into who would be on your team & interview them before accepting a position there.

    Cons

The entire company is very risk averse & not open to new ideas. There is a lot of red tape & bureaucracy that limits the work being done.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Hire younger people there and turn the company culture around.
