I have been working at BlackBerry full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Friendly atmosphere. Opportunities to cross-train with other team members. Flexible hours - as in you have the option to work from home as schedules of your team allow.
    Good insurance and 401K.
Tuition reimbursement for studies related to your field of work.
Free BlackBerry while you are employed.

    Cons

Current atmosphere is emotionally draining. Everyone is working so hard to keep the company relevant that it is taking a toll on everyone. Execs are trying so hard to keep a positive spin on their efforts to make the right changes but they aren't seeing that the average worker in the field is facing burn out.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Talk to the workers and listen to what we have to say, without our managers. Don't rely on the surveys. Those are left for interpretation and you just aren't getting our message.

People! - people that work for me, people I work with and people I work for.

Experienced great career growth during the advancing years, got tremendous exposure to building highly-scalable software.

    Cons

Exposure to cutting edge technological advancements to building software.

    Pros

Great benefits, free phone and flexible work schedule.

    Cons

    Red tape and poor communication.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

There are a lot of ways to save money other than eliminating headcount and fire the Market exes, and allow a company to do the marketing because we our failing miserably because of our horrible marketing!

I worked at BlackBerry full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Lots of great people, who are passionate about the company and the product (though that is changing), very fast speed of execution; autonomy and latitude to take on new projects and execute.

    Cons

Clearly, the market conditions have taken a toll on the work culture and employee morale. Sad story of another great company going/gone down the tubes.
Lack of product innovation, understanding the market and realizing that the world extend beyond Waterloo & Canada. Growth clearly behind it.
Recognition and promotions were more often than not; based on factors other than merit.
Very little straight-talk. Management tends to live in la-la land.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Salvage value now.
    1. Clearly you can excel in MDM, you still do email/PIM better than anybody else
    2. Focus on BBM cross-platform and BBM Channels. You can become a formidable OTT player with those
    3. Patents - there is still some value
    4. HW business - Run, you don't have a future

I have been working at BlackBerry full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Blackberry offers competitive salary and benefits. Employees usually get to participate in Beta program for the next generation phones. Also there's friendly working environment and nice people to work with.

    Cons

There could be long working hours and release schedules usually are very aggressive. Company is undergoing some tough time trying to turn around right now.

Good company overall, poor personal experience

    I worked at BlackBerry

    Pros

I cannot speak for the main offices, but in our remote office we had good benefits, competitive salary, and a mostly friendly atmosphere.

    Cons

Although the company has made improvements to their products and image, there are still many problems with inter-department communication, management, morale, and corporate nonsense.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Cut down on all the red tape, simplify processes (for example, it takes too much work to get access to new equipment). Realize that many employees in management positions are only trying to make themselves look good so their positions aren't eliminated, and otherwise are not contributing much to the company or its products. Internal systems are boated, redundant, confusing, and inefficient, which causes things to take 10 times as long to accomplish as they should.

    Pros

Hard problems to solve, very smart and interesting people, own the entire system and OS, canadian company

    Cons

Process and management are a burden and not very organized, too many middle level managers, market realities force overtime work all times of the year

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Consolidate and reduce the amount of middle management, provide clear leadership from VP's down through all employees, do not overwork your people or you will lose them, listen to your engineers
