I worked at BlackBerry as an intern for more than a year

    Pros

Exciting, fast paced and interesting place to work. The people are great, the employees are treated pretty well. Compensation is competitive and Waterloo is a good place to live. Very supportive of new ideas.

    Cons

Layoffs take a toll on employees and they are losing some great talent. Lots of Bureaucracy which hampers innovation.

I worked at BlackBerry full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

The pace of the work environment was dynamic, fluid, Exciting, exhilrating.

    Cons

The leadership, lacking vision, direction, and insight into the marketplace. Too many leaders contaminated the organization. Legal Division killed the business groups, tied their hands and stalled the business from getting to market.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

R&D needs to drive the company not Finance.

I have been working at BlackBerry full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

A great environment where employees are encouraged to take risks, and develop new technologies. Direction from management is typically "We need to accomplish this - figure out how to do it, do it, then report back to me". Independent thinking is encouraged.

Many great employees - smart, and good to work with.

    Cons

Some of the longer serving employees have a negative, defeatist attitude.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Engage the employees - they have a lot of ideas to offer.

Keep up the good work - there's been a marked improvement since John Chen came aboard

I worked at BlackBerry full-time for more than 8 years

    Pros

It was a great place to work with lots of room to grow and expand my career. Was very good to me as an employee.

    Cons

BlackBerry has certainly changed since I worked there. Such a difficult transition they've been through with the change in leadership and direction of the company.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Focus on work/life balance more for employees to prevent burn out.

IT Warehouse Assistant, Consultant, Technician – A year contract

Former Employee - IT Warehouse Assistant, Consultant, Technician in Waterloo, ON (Canada)

I worked at BlackBerry as a contractor for more than a year

    Pros

I loved, and still do, working with people, computers, making sure all my customers were satisfied, that way, I got the satisfaction for myself as well. I love when something is broken and I fix it, it is a good feeling. :-)

    Cons

I love always learning new things, seeing/meeting/talking with new people, helps me think quicker, helps with communication and deal with people easier. The job I had was a year contract, so no benefits, no compensations either. I loved the challenge of the fast paced environment.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

I don't have any, for my bosses were perfect, all of them I have worked with so far.

    Pros

Cutting edge technology, lots of brilliant and motivated individuals to work with.

    Cons

Promoting from outside the company. Hiring and facilitating weekly travel to people who live thousands of km's away

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Promote those passionate about the company, ignore those looking to make a name for themselves and looking for a quick cash grab.

    Pros

    Everything! People, environment, technology.
There is a great opportunity for working from home. I have been working from home for 3+ years.

    Cons

Salary could be little bit higher and benefits could be little bit better. Also benefits can be little bit better. But all these things I compare with Oil&Gas industry where I am right now.
