    I worked at BlackRock full-time

    Pros

Pockets of greatness, positive ethos and culture.

    Cons

A lot of middle management watching their back rather than working in the interests of the organisation - some pockets of management are absolutely shocking. Very poor business acquisition processes.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

There is some work needed to link the espoused culture to that of some pockets of management - a lack of cohesion.

I have been working at BlackRock full-time (more than a year)

    Pros

Everyone is very engaged and motivated
Good career opportunities- the prefer to promote their own rather than go external

    Cons

If you are not on a graduate programme there is little in the way of training/development programmes
An elitist culture with no diversity- the majority of employees are grads Oxford/Cambridge/St Andrews/LSE. If you are not from a red brick university or very upper class background you will stand out
    Not very competitive salary

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    More training programmes.
Diversity of ethic and social background- 90% of employees in the London office are white upper class.

I have been working at BlackRock

    Pros

    Good growth prospects
Mindful of family and work life balance (relatively for the industry)

    Cons

Too much management speak and jargon

I worked at BlackRock as an intern (less than a year)

    Pros

Competitive salary for finance sector internship, friendly people, fully involved and treated like a full-time employee. The culture at BlackRock seemed unique and from day one these values were engrained but they are very positive values to work by.

    Cons

Work at points was a bit low-level and monotonous and it would've been beneficial to know what I would've been working on before the internship began.

    Recommends
    Neutral Outlook

I have been working at BlackRock as an intern (less than a year)

    Pros

Great Environment, BlackRock employees were friendly and engaging. Made you feel as if you would be making a massive difference within the firm.

    Cons

Have heard rumors of completely different culture when you actually work there. Compensation can be cannibalized in exchange for having the brand name on your resume, or so I hear.

    Recommends

    Approves of CEO

I have been working at BlackRock full-time (more than a year)

    Pros

People are genuinely nice and open.

    Cons

Compensation is poor. Opaque in terms of career progression. Silos between teams within teams that does not allow much flexibility in movement. Core skillsets developed are usually very specialised and non-transferable. Calibre of people can be quite sub-standard in certain business groups.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Total compensation (base & bonus) needs to be more competitive compared to investment banks as it evolves to become more than just an asset manager.

I have been working at BlackRock full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Unique market leading position ensures quality of work

    Cons

Risk of working in a silo

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Middle / senior management badly needs lessons in people management. The risk management approach doesn't work everywhere.

    Recommends
    Neutral Outlook
    No opinion of CEO
