I have been working at Blackhawk Network full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Good location and some good people

    Cons

Long hours, no bonuses, very political, hard to grow within the company. Very little concern with employees thoughts and opinions.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Listen to your employees. They see and hear more than managers behind closed doors in their offices. Take actions on issues that are brought up. Ignoring them does not make them go away. It creates unhappy people and environments.

It's been a roller coaster ride so far - with very short up hills and many down hills.

    Pros

Phenomenal people to work with. Location is excellent.

    Cons

Upper management needs a refresh. Pay is below par. Lots of political issues. Lots of favoritism.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Appreciate what your people do for you. Give them the credit they deserve. Pay them what they deserve!

I worked at Blackhawk Network as a contractor (less than an year)

    Pros

The positive points I could think about this company are the only things that kept me going through my time here. I had the opportunity to work with some of the nicest people around also had the opportunity for having some of the best conversations over the lunch with people from different teams.

    Cons

I would personally not take part in any of the office politics but when your leads are involved, you are most likely to get roped in as well. Working on the weekends is a very common thing and is felt as a part of the working culture here. Unrealistic strict deadlines, poor release cycle processes e.g. sometimes testing code in Prod., unclear role boundaries especially when people from BU would start coding, creating defects left, right and center are some of the other things that come to my mind. School like rules - get in before 9.00 am, no playing ping pong before 5.00 pm are some of the guidelines often sent by the directors to their teams who are treated sometimes as peasants. There is little or no respect for developers. The seating is also somewhat like as in school. 4-5 people cramped in one row of desk divisions. This company is good for anyone who is badly in need of a job, but as and when people gain 1-2 yrs of experience they tend to leave due to frustrating reasons mentioned above. If you would like to experience the movie 'Office Space' in real life, this is the place.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Simple rule, treat others as you would like yourself to be treated. Believing in your employees is more important than you would think. Threat and rank pulling are not the methods of motivation.

    Good Location
    Good business model
    Money back up from Safeway

    Cons

Please stay from this company if you are professional. IT executives are not qualified to run the business. No process, things are getting done forcefully or by threating. There is no life work balance

I have been working at Blackhawk Network full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Most Sr. Management positions & above work hard sometimes & get payed well. Everything beneath that level works 5x's as hard but never sees returns for their efforts (AKA the Proletariat). A great company for college grads who need work experience & plan to move on after 2-3 years.

    Cons

The HR department is completely non-existant. This company works like a startup but is no longer a startup (in business for 10+ years). Blackhawk Network is not the company to work for if you are looking for career advancement opportunities that entail salary increases of 3.5% or better.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Encourage additional education and training for all levels, especially HR, Sr.Management and above.

    Pros

The gift card industry is growing and it is an exiting opportunity to be a part of. There are many people trying to do great things here.

    Cons

Senior management needs to recognize their employees for all the great things they do and stop treating their employees like robots.

There is no real work/life balance here. Senior management prefers to strain every ounce of time out of their employees without regard for their personal lives.

The pay is way below market and don't expect raises above 2% because unless you're senior management, you will not get anything higher than that.

Too much smoke and too many mirrors here. Senior management makes too many promises and never delivers.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Senior management needs to take a long hard look at the overall morale of their employees and realize that a simple "thank you" can go a long way from time to time. Don't take people for granted because without people, the company is nothing.

    Pros

Fundamentally BHN is an outstanding company and delivers a great product hitting almost all of the “6 rights” Early on there was an open door with management for new ideas, process' and the means to achieve them. There was an extremely fast pace to meet new goals, initiatives and challenges that came seemingly, weekly. Teams supported their management because they believed in them and the companies objectives and were willing to do the hard work and long hours - most of us thrived on the success.

    Cons

As the company grew its infrastructure and process’ to keep up and support it; didn’t. Sales teams were not effective in selling the companies portfolio, strengths and resources and as the pace of earlier years slowed and success was measured with smaller achievements the company’s dirty laundry was more apparent. A change in leadership left dysfunction and confusion between teams and a lack of clear roles, responsibilities and accountably with circumstances was relegated to finger pointing and blame.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Your senior title doesn’t always make you right. Stop pushing what you know is wrong down hill and utilized the great people you hired for input. Set goals with roles and responsibilities defined and then hold those responsible, accountable.

    I worked at Blackhawk Network

    Pros

    1) good location close to the mall
    2) great engineers except for a few
    3) CSO is very intelligent and very hard working

    Cons

    1) clueless engineers are getting promoted even if they do not do anything
    2) some engineers were hired just to fill in positions so literally anyone who walks in the door gets the job.
    3) 1 and 2 is an insult to the hardworking engineers that work there
    4) because of 1 and 2 good engineers are leaving

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

promote the ones that deserve to be promoted and get rid of the ones that are pulling the team down... don't promise employee retention programs and then leave the next week.

I have been working at Blackhawk Network

    Pros

    Interesting technical projects
    Good commute for some people
    Safeway generic items discount
    Health club membership for employees
Annual bowling day to compensate for the hundreds of unpaid hours

    Cons

Project teams often work in cramped windowless rooms eating "free" pizza for lunch and dinner
Zero privacy - all developers sit at long tables completely exposed
Contractors can only bill 40 hours no matter how much they work
Promises to make it up to us for the hard work - always lies
    Zero transparency from upper management
    Zero 401k employer match
    Poor compensation increases
Highly political environment - secrets and lies are everywhere
    Zero equity participation

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

If you don't start treating people right, you will soon not have anyone left to do your work. Your employees are not stupid - they know what you're doing, and probably they're getting ready to leave by now. We all understand that the business has priorities, but you have to balance those priorities against the reality that it takes time and good people to get things done.
