    Pros

Convenient location near Bart in Pleasanton, and near major freeway interchange. Smart people. Nice area near the mall.

    Cons

Lots of work without enough support. The company felt "old fashioned". Pay was low.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

If you want to compete with the Big Boys on the peninsula or in the South Bay, you need to pay better and give your people the tools to do the job.

I have been working at Blackhawk Network

    Pros

Blackhawk has a great business model and been creative at turning a prepaid commodity business into a widely dispersed retail network. There are sets of people that are truly dedicated employees and work very hard at what they do.

    Cons

At times, key departments don't work welll together at the Sr. Mgmt level and doesn't always give clear directions to the managers that are responsible for execution. Also they seem to be disconnected at times from the realities of the situation.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Include middle management more in the strategic planning process. That will help align annual goals for the better.

I have been working at Blackhawk Network full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Pay, benefits, challenging the world of prepaid products with focus on innovative technology. Gift card product are the winners by far.

    Cons

Lots of disconnect between management, departments. Timing seems to always be off when introducing new things.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Not so high level that you can't understand the disconnects

I have been working at Blackhawk Network full-time

    Pros

Ok work/life balance. The company is always growing. That could be a con as well... there isn’t much room for growth, you have to know people to pretty much move up. If you are content with staying in a position this is the place for you. Great perks. Company bbq’s, monthly socials and overall great events. That’s the best part.. you do get those small breaks for socials.

    Cons

Company moves too fast when an idea comes about… they take an idea and run with it. When they see an opportunity to make more money they push for it at all cost. When systems are broken someone has to be there to fix it. I haven’t had to so any overtime personally but, I have seen it done. Responsibilities are always being added but there isn’t always a cut and clear policy and procedure.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Try to be more hands on with the products.

I worked at Blackhawk Network as an intern for less than a year

    Pros

Average work ethic for tech, from my short time there, employees didn't seem overworked but also seemed to be getting things done. Never felt particularly stressed out there.

    Cons

    Management needs to be improved.
Things are done very inefficiently relative to the size of the company.
I felt an overall lack of a creative atmosphere in the office.

    Pros

Fairly small company, some opportunity to advance with extra effort
    Decent benefits
    Average salary
Below top management, the people are tremendous

    Cons

    Pretty political
    Management is not very decisive
Strategic planning could be much better
Mid-level managers and below are under-appreciated

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    This is for top management:
Find expertise in current and emerging technologies - you don't have it now.
Look to your assets in mid-level management and below to foster innovation.
Asses your R&D spending to maximize the results.
