I worked at Blockbuster part-time (more than an year)

    Pros

easy work, laid back attitude, ability to rent five movies per week and one game per week completely for free, 20% off other merchandise

    Cons

bad pay, no raises, little opportunity for advancement, no benefits for part time workers, sometimes boring, on your feet all day

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Allow raises! I worked there two years and never got a raise because the company was in financial straits.

I worked at Blockbuster part-time (more than an year)

    Pros

You're supposed to be knowledgeable about movies, so Blockbuster gives you a bunch of free rentals per week. Depending on location/management, it is a relatively stress-free environment to work in

    Cons

Upper management makes weird decisions that you have to deal with when the customers come in and complain. A lot of transient workers pass through who don't seem to care about anything.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Stick to a tighter corporate strategy and stop faffing around on decisions.

    Pros

Great rental benefits, great customers and employees.

    Cons

After bought out by Dish it got very corporate. They definitely did not have the employees best interest at heart.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

I think Dish has made a very big mistake by closing so many stores. Obviously this was the plan all along. They just never told us Store Managers the news.

I worked at Blockbuster part-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

The best part of the job was the hourly flexibility while going to school. In addition it was wonderful to be able to rent virtually all the movies and games you wanted for free.

    Cons

The pay was not the greatest but was fine for my situation. Depending on your manager there was more and more pressure to upsell additional products and services.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Understand that online viewing is the future and try to get ahead of the game. It might be too late but you need to go that way.

I worked at Blockbuster part-time (more than an year)

    Pros

I was around movies and I love movies. We also encouraged to check-out 8 free movies and video games a week so that we could take to the customers about them. How awesome is that? (Although, I probably should be getting OT pay for that haha).

My co-workers and manager were very helpful, friendly, and nice too. I've heard some horror stories about other branch managers though.

Also, the community and the customers of that particular store were awesome. I remember having some awesome conversations about movies and life in general with the regular customers that would come in.

Interacting with customers and the community is what I'm going to miss the most about Blockbuster and video stores in general. You're never going to get that out of that red box or getting your movies delivered to you 3 days.

    Cons

The downside was the pay and hours. I think customer service reps in general deserve more pay in general.

Oh and aside from being promoted to a manager, I don't really know where else you can go from there...

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

I worked at Blockbuster full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Well-run company. Able to have fun and share your knowledge on a daily basis. Managers who want to help you move up in the company. Interaction with customers and forming relationships is a rarity these days. Employees at other stores who helped out when needed.

    Cons

Ideas were tough to get approval from corporate. Training modules could have been streamlined. Explaining to customers when product did not arrive in timely fashion.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Develop a better use of email so store managers could relay product and supply needs to corporate and stores in their region. Try to sell either phones or tablets and give year free of online with purchase.

I worked at Blockbuster full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

A chance to share my geek knowledge of all things cinema related to people who, for the most part, didn't care.

    Cons

Long hours. No benefits because of the financial crisis within the company. My regional manager required all store managers work a minimum 45 hour week as well as Friday and Saturday.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Try to care a bit more about your salaried employees.
