I worked at Bloomberg L.P. full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Seemingly great opportunities - not on the legal (product & data) side. Financial side poses much better chances for long-term growth.

    Cons

Limited growth potential. Team Leaders & Mangers do very little to encourage individual growth. Far too great an emphasis on individual metrics, rather than long-term growth with company.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Treat people better and they will respond accordingly. Management tends to be almost robotic. They receive seemingly ample training in dealing with their team members and still lack an ability to relate to their teams.

I have been working at Bloomberg L.P. full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

    Food is served during lunchtime.

    Cons

There is no room for growth here. Politics at the workplace run the whole office. To get ahead, you have to have connections.

I worked at Bloomberg L.P. as a contractor for less than a year

    Pros

    Free food?...thats all I got.

    Cons

I should have been skeptical from the start... I was hired as a temp through Accounting Principals for a "6+ month" temp position with "permanent potential" as an analyst at Bloomberg in Skillman, NJ. It was hardly an interview, the lady went through my resume asked if I was familiar with excel and said the job was mine. I could not believe the process could have been this simple after striking out in interviews for months. So I was wary to say the least.

First day on the job show up and SURPRISE there are 20 other temps starting with me. Yes that's right TWENTY. They take us all to the back corner training room and two young guys do a half-ass job of showing us the Bloomberg Terminal software and "train" us going through income statements, balance sheets and cashflows while familiarizing us with their software. On the first day they even took us to get our temporary ID badges turned into regular ones.

We had off on Friday for good Friday so the first week was only 4 days (planned by Bloomberg I'm sure). Friday afternoon I get a call from Accounting Principals informing me I was let go because "I was not picking it up fast enough."

If I had to guess the majority of the 20 people I started with were let go because I may not have been the best at "picking it up fast enough", but I was far from the worst.

And thats how a "6+ month hire" with "permanent potential" turns into a 4 day job. I was made to believe this was a real opportunity when clearly it was a scam to get as many people there and quickly get the pick of the litter.

I have been working at Bloomberg L.P. full-time for more than a year

    Pros

    - Awesome Benefits (health, dental, vacations
    - Generous Leave time opportunities
    - Free Food (if you like junk food)

    Cons

    - Middle management can't stand up to NY
    - Open Environment leads to passive aggressive and immature behavior on the part of co-workers and managers. Even if you are hardworking and accomplish your projects and goals, they will make up stories about you watching "videos".
-Flexible work agreements while available are frowned upon. If your manager is not 100% on board expect some unexpected actions to result.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    - Care about your employees work/life balance. Not everyone can be in the office for 60 hours a week.
    - NJ Middle management should learn to stand up to NY when needed. This will allow Middle managers need to have confidence in their decisions. Also allow them to stop sweating the small stuff.
-Understand that not everyone has a cookie cutter personality; you should learn to communicate and validate your employees concerns.

In the beginning (10+ yes) they treated you like you mattered but things sure have changed, now you are just a number.

I have been working at Bloomberg L.P.

    Pros

    Paid health insurance
    Free food and snack
    Cds

    Cons

Inept group leaders think they are glorified managers but really have no experience managing people.
No praise for a job well done or all the extra hours put in, instead pointing out all your weak areas with no help to improve.
Giving out awful performance reviews just setting you up to fail and pushing you toward their chopping block.
Awful human resource management - the are not there to help you but instead to back up the team leaders.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Hire people to manage that actually have some experience in management. Take care of your employees and you'll see people that are happy to come to work and give 110% of themselves. Stop treating people like they are part of an assembly line. Go back to the way Bloombeeg intended to have his company run. You are losing good people over insignificant amounts of money and compromising people's health in the process!
