I have been working at Bloomberg L.P. full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

Open environment that does allow you gain a lot of experience as a young professional. Some valuable experiences with some great mentors.

    Cons

Need better opportunity for growth - things become stagnate after a year or so. It is difficult to transition in this position throughout this company due to your specific experience in data.

I have been working at Bloomberg L.P. full-time (less than an year)

    Pros

Bloomberg has a young, fast-paced culture that welcomes fresh college grads and constantly looks for ways to innovate, improve their products, or access new markets. The benefits are great including everything from free food (all day, every day) to 401(k) employer matches up to 15% of your annual salary, fully-sponsered and reimbursed MBA programs and CFA programs, and 4 weeks paid vacation from the first day you start. There is also an extensive 3-month training program for new hires so onboarding is very smooth and easy. No need to worry about being thrown into something that you have no idea how to do.

    Cons

A significant amount of time is spent on doing the same task over and over again. It limits the time you can actually work on meaningful or challenging products and can become boring and mundane. The majority of roles in the company are centered on data ENTRY rather than data ANALYSIS as they lead you to believe. There are many brilliant people in this company with advanced degrees and designations such as MBAs and CFAs, yet they still do the same mundane tasks as others just starting at the company....ENTERING data....a task that could be completed by someone with a high school diploma. Nonetheless, the pay does consistently increase as you stay with the firm and there is significant opportunity to advance to managerial roles within your first 4-7 years with the firm.

I worked at Bloomberg L.P. as an intern (less than an year)

    Pros

The food is fantastic. I'm talking filet mignon and lobster on special occasions. Oh yeah, it's free. Employees are friendly and helpful.

    Cons

Limited upside career potential. Skillman, NJ is kind of in the middle of nowhere. I mean, there are literally farms surrounding the campus.

I have been working at Bloomberg L.P. full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Great benefits, competitive salary, meritocracy-based culture, collaborative environment, transparent and trusting culture. The company is willing to take risks, but rewards its employees well.

    Cons

Horizontal corporate structure, not much opportunity for vertical progression. Easy to get "stuck" in a role and remain stagnant for years.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Management could do a better job evaluating the market and deriving targets from which its employees' bonus is determined.

    Pros

    Free food
    Great Culture
Lots of opportunities to explore different parts of the business

    Cons

In order to get things approved too many people need to be apart of the decision. it is too bureaucratic

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

I have been working at Bloomberg L.P. as a contractor (more than an year)

    Pros

Great place to start your career. Ability to learn from very bright people and work on projects that make a difference.

    Cons

Position is temporary with virtually no opportunity to get promoted for even those that exhibit talent and solid work ethic. Many full-time employees hardly ever acknowledge contract staff as deserving enough to breathe in the same air as them even though they are bright young people feeling the effects of the economy.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Reward those that have shown the necessary ability to contribute within the company.

I worked at Bloomberg L.P. full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

*Overall compensation is actually quite good, especially for college grads, and exceptional employees can get raises approaching 20% for the first several years of their employment
*Benefits are outstanding. I do not know anyone else who works for a company that pays 100% of the premium and, for example, two different ophthalmologists remarked to me that I had one of the best vision plans available. Vacation time is very good too--20 days plus 9 public holidays. Compare that to Amex: only 23 days total for employees with 0-4 years of tenure. Sick time is unlimited, but be careful with that--managers are hyper sensitive to abuse (rightfully so). Only con with vacation time is that there's little opportunity to grow this--employees with 10+ years get a bump to 23 days, plus public holidays, but that's the max.
*Ample opportunity to move to a new role, although roles in Princeton office are not a varied as the 1,000 employees might suggest
*Bloomberg isn't afraid to promote young, enthusiastic employees. There are employees who have been with the company for 20 years, but there are plenty with 7 or so that are being groomed as future leaders. Bloomberg truly is a meritocracy.

    Cons

*Smart employees who don't take initiative can be overlooked & remain in existing job for years
*Annual bonus is a significant portion of overall compensation; raises tend to be more concentrated in bonus than in salary
*Relatively limited number of advancement opportunities without moving to headquarters in NYC
*Flexible work arrangements allowed, but, in reality, are frowned upon. Work from home is permitted on a limited basis, even for "trusted" employees
*If you want to be taken seriously and get ahead, you cannot work a 9-5 (min 50 hours/week)

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Continue to focus on career paths and helping employees to achieve long-term career satisfaction. Recognize that the NYC office offers ample opportunities to employees, but all other offices pale in comparison
