I worked at Blue Coat Systems full-time for more than a year

    Pros

They feed you very well when days are very busy, so you can work through your lunch. This company offers great benefits.

    Cons

No room for growth with this company. Very high layoff rate. Very cutthroat. They expect you to work 14 hours days. Had to wait 6 months before receiving overtime pay.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Too aggressive. No empathy for there employess. Very dishonest.

I worked at Blue Coat Systems as a contractor for less than a year

    Pros

Location wasn't bad. Pretty flexible to working off site when the weather got nasty

    Cons

Too many to list. No sense of urgency on the part of the hiring managers. Poor management at the local level and not a nice culture. Also lack of name recognition. Nobody knew who BlueCoat is, since it is a West Coast based company

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Treating people nicer and with respect would be a good place to start.

    Pros

You like chaos. You thrive on office politics. You hate competence. They pay well. Worked with talented people albeit direct co-workers were not among them.

    Cons

A lot of nonsense on a daily basis. Constant interoffice politics and changes in direction based on who's connected to whom, not what's best for the customer.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Hara kiri.

I worked at Blue Coat Systems full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Gartner MQ leader. Good people (individual contributors), and good customer base.

    Cons

Management is solely focused on acquiring companies, analyzing the business, and prepping it for sale, and not on the broken areas - engineering bugs, support, etc.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Lose the analysis paralysis; listen to your people, stop the micromanagement, and fix the stuff that is broken.

I worked at Blue Coat Systems as a contractor for less than a year

    Pros

    Good Holiday Party at Xmas

    Cons

Employees not friendly and don't even say Hi if pass you by in hall way or in elevator. Everyone just kept to themselves like they're afraid to socialize with anyone. Lots of politics and backstabbing. People are hired not based on their skill set but based on who they knew at the company.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Change the culture and morale of the company.

I worked at Blue Coat Systems full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

There are some good people and fun times, and the customers that they have are pretty pregnant with their solutions.

    Cons

Senior management, especially the President/COO, are shady. Something is going on in this company, and it isn't good. Seems as if they are stripping the company of assets prior to a sale to an unsuspecting buyer. Caveat emptor! Any potential employee - ask lots of questions and do your due diligence. Only a select few salespeople make good money year after year. If you dig deep enough, you'll uncover the issues. Salespeople are going to be walking into a situation where the angry customers (engineering defects, and horrific customer support) are going to be frustrating, and eat up a bunch of your time.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Try and bring it back to the positive culture it was prior to the Thoma Bravo acquisition.

I have been working at Blue Coat Systems full-time for more than a year

    Pros

it's a paycheck, but you'll work hard to get it. Do you like working 6 or 7 days a week? It's better than digging ditches.

    Cons

Minimal benefits, no stock options or ESPP.
There is no life - work balance.
There's a difference in being owned by private venture capitalists and a "private company". And it's not a good difference. Beware.
Management rules by fear and seems to think employees re expendable commodities. The attrition rate at the company is unbelievable.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Understand that your employees are not commodities to be easily replaced.
Stop ruling by fear and expecting employees to be happy with that.
