I have been working at Blue Coat Systems full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

If you are willing to work 12 hour days every day and perform work volumes that are meant for 3 people it would be a great place for you.

    Cons

There is no work-life balance unless you are an engineer. Perks for engineers only. If you are not an engineer you are made to feel unimportant and if you question anything you are told you have an attitude.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Pay attention to your employees and don't treat them like you would be willing to replace them rather than fix what needs fixed. The company announce a core value refresh and the Senior Executives have stated they will walk the talk and expect all managers to do the same but there are managers in a couple departments that have not attempted to make the change.

I have been working at Blue Coat Systems full-time

    Pros

Has great potential to make it big. Future focus in security technology looks great.

    Cons

No employee stock benefits; employees get nothing if company does well from stock perspective. Talented employees leaving; it will be hard to execute if the employees are not motivated.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

The company will succeed only if the company is willing to share its wealth among employees and have them work hard to get the company to the next level. Check out Silicon Valley Startup benefits.

I have been working at Blue Coat Systems full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Good healthcare, although each year they cut it back a little. They provide food often on fridays and it is an okay place to work. You know whats expected and what to expect.

    Cons

Since they were bought out things are gradually slipping down. I interviewed and was hired for an IT administrator position but now only do office administrative work and hardly actually touch a computer which is detrimental to my career growth. Cut backs yearly to benefits and somewhat esoteric and counterproductive systems are used. Plus pay isn't great and there is not a lot of negotiation.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Actually specify and be honest about what job postings are for and don't require college degrees and programming experience to be able to order a replacement hard drive over the phone.

My experience was tumultuous. The company went from public to private and I had 4 different Directors in one year.

I worked at Blue Coat Systems full-time for more than a year

    Pros

I knew people I had worked with from previous work experiences. My first Director was awesome but she left. I loved the work as this was in my area of expertise and I got to travel and speak on the company's behalf and make a difference in sales to the government and military sectors.

    Cons

Company is not focused, has too many changeovers, did not understand my role and how it could impact their business. This was a new position and had I experiences consistency in product and program managers, and able to ensure the understanding of their release cycle and the importance of building security into the development processes, it could have been much better and they would be better placed for strategic sales. Too many people interfered and without solid direction, they are not going to achieve what is necessary to grow this sales area, on a global basis.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Get out and talk to your salespeople, understand the Federal market and what it takes just to have the opportunity to do business. Stop living in your glass houses and communicate the direction of where the company is going to your resources because silence causes unrest, insecurity and confusion.

I have been working at Blue Coat Systems full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Restructuring, improving performance, great employees. The employees that still work here are awesome. I have made a lot of friends here and enjoy the people.

    Cons

Poor management direction, lack of employee benefits (compared to before). The upper management doesn't seem to care about the future of the company, only the short term profit. They have removed a lot of the free drinks and food provided, eliminated the cafe area, made the gym smaller and have few events for the employees.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Grow the company for long term success, relay those goals to the employees and provide a long term road map for the employees.

I have been working at Blue Coat Systems full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

The overall compensation package used to be decent. The co-workers are smart people and seasoned professionals. The company typically respects work-life balance.

    Cons

Over the last few years, the company had undergone too many changes at the management level. This always affected employee morale in a negative way.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Stick to a single well defined business plan and align all departments behind that.

Challenging times at Blue Coat - uncertain with layoffs looming

I have been working at Blue Coat Systems

    Pros

Despite a long history of mergers, layoffs, ups and downs, Blue Coat employees are bright, for the most part, likeable and good co-workers that believe in their product (although the customer base and market share doesn't fully share this view).

    Cons

There's the history of ups and downs, layoffs, mergers and in the end, a bit of a rag-tag feel. Some of the old-timers are slightly prima-donna-ish, particularly in the top-floor corporate roles that are caught somewhere in the ether of between-function-positions. Channels teams tend to manage their business as though channel partner success is more important than product, sales and BC business success.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Blue Coat broke the rule of hiring talent - I saw 3 levels of managers (group manager, director & VP) hire talented staff ...only to have these 3 levels displaced the original 3 in layoffs. Careful who you hire here - it may be safer to hire slightly less talented people with a little less ambition.
