    Pros

Great staff in Boxborough, strong leadership, lots of resources, comfortable and outstanding culture. Dedicated to challenging their interns and including them in the SDLC.

    Cons

Not much to say, Only that company was a little opaque when it came to current business issues

    Pros

Fast moving company and culture (relative to the larger, security vendors), Friendly and enthusiastic environment; Plenty of opportunity for training, growth, experience; A growing leader in a hot, exciting industry; New management brings in positive, enthusiastic life and drive within the company

    Cons

Still has to evolve some Sales, Ops and Development processes and procedures to be more effective; Needs to amplify its value prop more WW; Better enablment of the sales force and channels is required, esp. due to the increasing number of products/product; Needs to be more aggressive against competitors in marketing and sales

    Advice to Management

Consider spot bonuses - even small ones of cash/gift cards, etc - for successfully completed key projects and deliverables to boost morale and drive employee recognition. Right now, only a few employees are recognized in Quarterly All Hands meetings. Recognition and reward can and should take place outside of these meetings as well...

    realistic targets

    Cons

    technically stuck in the past
experienced person has nothing to learn here
zero visibility - all top-down communication events are hollow

    Advice to Management

I like it as it is and my advice is "Change nothing!" However this may bite back. A very dynamic competition is growing out there.

    Pros

The flexibility and the ability to work remotely allows me to have a better work-life balance. The ever changing environment provides challenges and prevents boredom.
Most employees are smart and fun to work with and passionate about what they do.

    Cons

Too many people in management positions and not enough people actually doing the work. Always challenged with lack of resources.
Not a whole lot of career growth available for my position.

    Advice to Management

Bonus structure could be a little more balanced.
Although this has gotten better over the years, there still seems to be a lot of management turnover.
Some of the management makes unreasonable decisions that puts a lot of extra work on the already overworked employees. Management makes solution decisions without considering requirements and integration.

  7. Happily employed by Blue Coat with exposure to interesting projects as the company evolves.

    Pros

Being a growing company, there are always new challenges and projects to get involved with.
The company recognizes and rewards hard work.
    Competitive benefits package.
I have had a positive and supportive experience of my management team.

    Cons

Our systems/processes need to catch up with the growth in other areas of the business.
Without development in systems/processes there is a lot of needlessly manual work created.
In a lot of cases the wrong teams / employees are responsible for ownership and delivery of information.

    Advice to Management

    Communication could be improved.
Invest in the back office systems.
Data is growing at an exponential rate and we need better systems to harvest the data around us.

Good and solid company with lots of fortune 500 customers. Flexible work hours and fair compensation. Free lunches twice a week.

    Cons

Difficult to move up the ranks without a senior manager as mentor. Information distribution needs lot of improvements.

    Advice to Management

    Pros

Since going private the company has been pretty stable in terms of job security. Bonuses have been good.

The benefits are pretty good. Vacation/Sick time is especially good (the best I've seen) and I have never taken any flack for using it. There are a lot of company activities and lunches including frequent technical training talks.

Work/life balance is good. I don't know many people that work a lot of overtime and schedules are flexible, at least on my team.

My experience has been that people are treated like adults and not micro-managed.

    There are free drinks/snacks.

Upper management seems to have a pretty good vision of how to keep the company growing.

    Cons

They delayed merit increases by several months both of the last two cycles. The review process is de-motivational and managers are way too overloaded to pay any attention to career development. There is no clear path for advancement once you get to a senior level position. Performance ratings feel arbitrary with artificial limits placed on how many people can get higher ratings (which are tied to better bonuses now).

The downside of all the fiscal discipline has been that there aren't enough people to get all the work done so most people wear multiple hats. They don't generally require overtime but there's always so many competing priorities that a lot of things get dropped or mismanaged simply because there's too much going on.

They are implementing some really draconian security measures for engineering.

This is a very much a top-down company. Individual innovation is not valued or appreciated very much in less it happens to be related to something sexy. The focus is entirely on implementing upper management's vision as quickly as possible.

    Advice to Management

    Stop messing with raises.
Give people some breathing room to allow for more focused work and some bottom-up innovation.

    Pros

Technology: Cyber security is hot right now, Gartner rates them in the Magic Quadrant
Benefits: Matching 401K, competitive salaries, company doing well so bonuses are excellent
Other: Free snacks, drinks, bagels on Friday, lots of social activities with food served, however no in house cafeteria but lunches are subsidized.
Culture : Hard working people, flexible working environment with lots of autonomy (but it depends on area you work in). Work life balance flexibility, feels like a small start company but with reasonable processes and systems in place.

    Cons

-Owned by private equity company, no equity offered, starting to lose people to other companies who are. Management needs to do something.
-Rumer's of being a potential acquisition target is causing some uncertainty with employees especially those who want to stay in a small company.

    Advice to Management

Reconsider the no equity position especially if company is sold, unlikely the good people who do the work will still around if there are no retention incentives. Your people are being aggressively recruited (especially in the valley) do something about it.
