I have been working at Blue Cross Blue Shield of Minnesota full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

Great local mission. Very tolerant of different employee types, i.e. idiosyncrasies, etc.

    Cons

High turnover at all levels. Poor technology platform. Confused governance. Poor advancement for highly skilled, senior level staff. Specifically excluded.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

You might need to keep your senior level brain trust. Be cautious on blanket acceptance of ideas from your HR Dept.

    Crowded and spread out

I worked at Blue Cross Blue Shield of Minnesota as a contractor for less than a year

    Pros

Nice meeting rooms, decor and cafeteria.

    Cons

Crowded. Cubicles are sometimes double occupancy. A lot of people near retirement. Low cubicle walls. Absolutely no privacy. Housed in 5 buildings spread out over miles. Parking lots nearly full by 8:00 am.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Offer an early retirement package. That way maybe you won't lose 58 million dollars like you just did for the fiscal year ending 03/31/13. They are on their 3rd CEO in the past year so it appears there are problems at the top.

I have been working at Blue Cross Blue Shield of Minnesota full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

Enjoyed working there for many years, good people, good environment, good benefits, good support

    Cons

Lately a culture of support and collaboration has devolved into a culture of disfunction and bosses that are ineffective, incompetent and narcisists.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Need to evaluate and really analyze the effectiveness of so many VPs with so few people reporting to them. They defer decisions that eventually make themselves, passive aggressive culture without the courage (a BCBSMN value) to be effective leaders with compassion that employees want to follow and work with!

I have been working at Blue Cross Blue Shield of Minnesota

    Pros

Long time provider in the field of health care insurance, responsive to the expectations and requirements of accrediting bodies, active and supportive of employees engaged in community service outside the office, provides means and resources for maintaining good health and exercise during the work day, maintains high standards for clinical expertise within the areas of case management and utilization review, competitive salary ranges.

    Cons

Slow to implement changes in business processes and to provide resources needed to compete with other national health care companies. Inadequate technology/systems and tends to upgrade in stages rather than implementing when able to provide the complete product. Upper managment out of touch with daily operations and declining morale & doesn't seem to care. Departmental and divisional silos that negatively impacts effective communication about commonly shared information and tasks.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Come out among the people and be willing to learn about the real company and its needs .
