I worked at Blue Cross (MI) as an intern (more than an year)

    Pros

    Fun company culture.
    Really embracing intern involvement.
You will do actual work, not just work the copy machine and get coffee.

    Cons

If you're not interested in insurance, may be tough to focus on the work.

I worked at Blue Cross (MI) full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

benefits, salary, industry leader, ability to contribute.

    Cons

silos-needs to continue improving on communication within divisions & overall. System changes need to be more of a priority--members benefits and providers ability to comply with billing etc requires BCBSM to adjudicate benefits and process claims & payments correctly the 1st time in.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Directors & above need to meet & connect more with below manager staff to see what really goes on.

    Pros

    Many opportunities to learn.
Great corporate culture and work environment.
Compensation was competitive for an internship.
Multiple opportunities for training, even as an intern.
Offered a job but I had to turn it down do to relocation.

No cons, I would work there again!

I have been working at Blue Cross (MI) as a contractor (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Its a great environment to work, once you get in and do your job right you will remain there for ever, unless the job is outsourced. If your manager is good, can work from home at times.

    Cons

You need to clean your own table space

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Do not look at other managers team on how they chit chat or how they got work from home approval.

I have been working at Blue Cross (MI) full-time (less than an year)

    Pros

Wonderful people. Great sense of teamwork (at least in my department). Excellent benefits (they're an insurance company. You should expect that!). They are committed to being a part of the rebirth of downtown Detroit, and it creates an exciting work atmosphere.

    Cons

Pays less than industry average for application developers. Change happens at the speed you would expect of a large, multifaceted organization, but to their credit, they are committed to process improvement.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Keep up the modernization efforts, especially with process automation. Stay the course in downtown Detroit; you are doing good work in the community and the state!

    Solid company to work for

I have been working at Blue Cross (MI)

    Pros

Good work life balance and great connections to make. The company tries to listen to what the employees have to say.

    Cons

A lot of processes are extremely over complicated and it is difficult to change anything as so many people have worked there for so long and are not willing to change.

Good company to work for, but a lot of red tape.

I have been working at Blue Cross (MI) full-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

Benefits are great. Pretty good work-life balance. Strong leaders are sprinkled throughout the company.

    Cons

Compensation model is changing for the worse. Communication from the top down is not always clear.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Solicit more feedback from the front line employees about what things really need addressing. Reward high performing employees with more pay.

I have been working at Blue Cross (MI) full-time (less than an year)

    Pros

Low stress, pretty good pay, great health benefits, some departments allow working from home, really care about their employees and are constantly holding trainings, very committed to improving healthcare in the state of Michigan

    Cons

15 days of vacation/sick leave combined for entry level, everything that normally comes with working for a company this large (variation by department), it is located in downtown detroit, promotions are a bit slow to come, not always challenging/engaging work (but again low stress)

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Keep doing what you're doing

I worked at Blue Cross (MI) as a contractor

    Pros

Lots of job offers, hopefully you will have everything they ask for.

    Cons

You are expected to work as many hours as it takes on a daily bases without recognition.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Be more in touch with the contractors after you hire them. I think BCBS does a good job at picking the right people for the right job. But the person who actually supervises them may not be happy that the person has been brought in and puts the new person in a position to be set up for failure.
