I have been working at Blue Cross full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

The pros of this job are definitely the benefits and experience you gain within the Blues system. Working for BCBSA if like working at "corporate" for any other nationwide company. The benefits for tenure employees is wonderful. After 5 years, the rewards of service become very (mutually) beneficial.

    Cons

Some (not all) of the management in place are there because of their subject knowledge versus their actual ability to "manage". Unfortunately, I am in a position with a manager who has no leadership or people management skills, which is why I (even after many years of service) am looking for other opportunities.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Place management on their ability to manage and develop staff. Investing in your staff from a leadership perspective is just as important as investing in them from a knowledge perspective. Development can only happen if managers are able to develop employees.

I have been working at Blue Cross full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

flexible with work and family life in my current department

    Cons

salary low and not much opportunity to advance professionally

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Instead of forcing job title changes that people are not satisfied with (without a choice unless it's to leave the company), should review the actual work that is being performed and recognize/reward high contributors. Terrible HR.

I have been working at Blue Cross full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Upper management works hard to ensure employee's are trained well. Ensuring that each employee takes advantage of every opportunity to learn, train, and move up within the company.

    Cons

The pay for non-supervisor positions is low. Increases in pay are minimal, and position changes (upward) are often based on the experience within the company, not a person's total experience.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Compensate employee's for the specific work done, not just for the title of a position. A competitive salary makes for competitive employee's.

I worked at Blue Cross full-time

    Pros

Note all Blue Cross Associations work independently. This comment is for Blue Cross Blue Shield of MA only. Blue Cross and Blue Shield of MA is a major carrier of health insurance within the state. Being a major carrier, they have had a big influence in how health insurance is being managed within the state including paying providers on health outcomes rather than health services. This is an innovative company and a leader in the field.

    Cons

Management relies on the same small core people to lead and participate in project teams. If you are new it is impossible to break into a project team. I found mobility within the organization impossible as well.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Engage all your employees in the good work that is going on in the organization. New employees can disengage quickly if they see they are an outsider.
