    Pros

Ok company if you're kick starting your career, decent benefits, slightly below competitive salaries, unless you're target is at the executive level.

    Cons

Your career is what you make, that being said - sometimes being in the right environment can make all the difference. I wouldn't recommend this company to a top performer who wants to be challenge and work around smart people . Internal politics and bureaucracy can be a turnoff. They're a little behind the curve with technology, and investing in their employees growth.

The internship was a great stepping stone, but BCBS was a large, slow moving insurance dinosaur

I worked at Blue Cross and Blue Shield Association as an intern (less than a year)

    Pros

Intense job security. I saw a bunch of poorly performing employees who were allowed to retain their positions for years. They seem to sincerely care about the health and happiness of their employees. Some leadership seemed bright and company is definitely trying to adapt to the new market. The company is dominant and without any real competitors.

    Cons

As a result of BCBS's dominance they have not had to adapt in years and it is a therefore very large dinosaur of the company with outdated technology and has a moderate level of slow thinking low level employees.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Adapt the new market and find a better way to get everyone on board than quarterly propaganda like meetings in which you say functionally nothing about the company. Listen to middle managers and find a way to eliminate the bureaucratic nature of the company. You will lose good ideas across all levels due to the old, hierarchical structure that the company works on.

I worked at Blue Cross and Blue Shield Association as a contractor (less than a year)

    Pros

Direct supervisors were very nice at BCBSA and turnover seems to be very low because, apparently, there are good benefits. It's also a very diverse workforce, which is great.

    Cons

If you took away the flat-screen monitors on every desk, you would swear it was 1990. They still have old-fashioned cubicles, and they don't allow jeans or "open-toed footwear" or "beachwear..." In other words, the culture (if you can call it that) is extremely corporate and repressive. When you log into your computer, you're a number, not a name. And they block all social media while also monitoring your e-mails. It's all in the name of security. The main problem seems to be that various departments don't communicate with each other, making things twice as hard to accomplish on a time frame.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Loosen up! You have some good people but you're not staying current with all of the oppressive rules and "security."

I have been working at Blue Cross and Blue Shield Association full-time (less than a year)

    Pros

great work and personal life balance.

    Cons

old technology and not much technical challenge in work. no code review and really less unit test coverage bring up very low stability in production and much high effort on production support

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

code review procedure and unit test coverage check should be brought in soon. overall code quality is low and brings up low stability and performance issue on production. That is main reason why this company needs a lot many efforts on production support

I have been working at Blue Cross and Blue Shield Association full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Opportunity to familiarize yourself with the Blues and inter-plan issues and opportunities.

    Cons

Very risk averse leadership that is extremely reactive. Operates in silos and senior leadership do not work well together which gets reflected at lower levels as well. Many people clock in and out and do no more.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Get some new blood at the senior officer level and have all officers retire after 10 years.
    Trust staff more.
Get a real talent management process in place and follow it.

I have been working at Blue Cross and Blue Shield Association (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Employees are eligible for advancement after a year in their current position

    Cons

No opportunities to learn private business

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Be straight with employees about what's included on their annual review. Don't make employees waste time on an activity that is not even going to be included on their review. Management should try to really be straight with the employee
