I have been working at Blue Shield Of California full-time (more than a year)

    Pros

Company values work-life balance. They are in the process of a multiyear campaign to join the "Best Places to Work" survey. As a result, they've relaxed some policies and started to trust their employees more. Blue Shield of California, in my experience, always seems to act with integrity and the mission of bringing affordable healthcare is admirable. I'm proud to work here.

    Cons

Healthcare insurance is a highly competitive and highly regulated industry. All of that being said, it's also rapidly evolving with the Affordable Care Act. In other words, if you come to work here - be prepared to get your hands dirty and produce. This isn't a place to just coast out your career.

I have been working at Blue Shield Of California full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

MIssion is to make health insurance affordable
Company is growing fast and there are many opportunities
Company gives back any profit in excess of 2% to members or the community
Not-for-profit means that many employees are here for the company's mission, not just for the job

    Cons

Transforming health care is very hard work so the culture is changing to be performance oriented -- don't come here to coast in your career.

I have been working at Blue Shield Of California full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Unlike some organizations, Blue Shield really does value its employees. But this is really only meaningful if your own management walks the talk. If not, alt least there are other opportunities within the company. Bad people are not exclusive to any organization and most organizations are ineffective at changing individual behavior unless it falls well to the outside of extreme.

    Cons

Benefits continue to erode, as they do elsewhere.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

We're a long way from silo busting and continuing to operate the business under a feudal system makes enterprise alignment challenging at the middle management level. We assign work based on abstract roles or titles rather than assessing and finding the right skillsets and expertise needed for best results.

    Pros

Good orientation. Allow for learning phase. Thorough info and resources to learn the job.

    Cons

the company culture as to what to say and not say to vendors.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

There ought to be employee evals even with contracted employees for 30/60/90 days so as to redirect the focus of the work for what is super important and what to kind of let go of.

I have been working at Blue Shield Of California full-time (more than a year)

    Pros

As many reviews that are posted here, it really all depends on what department you work in and who your boss and team leads are. I can say I am very happy in the department I'm in and the people that I get to work with. I don't want to disclose my identity so I won't go into details on what department but I will say I'm at the SF Beale location.

I have worked at other big Fortune 500 companies before and Blue Shield of CA is really trying hard to get things right and to become #1 and a great place to work. The company is about 5,000 employees so not to big but small enough to make a difference and to be noticed for your accomplishments.

Some benefits that should be pointed out:
-You get healthcare coverage from day one
    -20 days paid vacation
-pension after three years with the company
-the ability to work from home at least one day a week if needed (depends on your manager)
-discount on your medical insurance for being healthy
-healthy cafe and gym on site including "WalkStations" on certain floors of the main office.

With new leadership, strategic plan, and a road map of where our product lines and what we plan to accomplish, I have faith that I will be at the company for a long time.

    Cons

While I have colleagues that have been here for 10+ years, I also have seen at least one person leave on their own behalf each month. Some people are not happy and the reality of a big company is that things sometimes move a bit slower since it's not a startup company. It's healthcare insurance!

The corporate chain of command is also very instilled in the BSC culture. You must follow the hierarchy of command versus just reaching out to someone. There is some favoritism in the group and that's just office politics at its best to climb the corporate ladder. Everyone seems to be a "project manager" including myself even though that was not the role I was originally hired for.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Keep your employees by:
-engaging them with praise for their accomplishments
-continue to have your all-hands meetings per quarter and listen to your employees
-compensate the market rate salary for positions to get the best possible talent and don't rush to hire
-invest in your employees through self-learning and promote from within before going outside

I chose to work for this company and wake up happy to go to work each morning because of it's mission statement and the work that I do to make the mission statement happen. I want to finish my career here and hope that management gets it together!

I have been working at Blue Shield Of California full-time (more than a year)

    Pros

    Where to start…
good pay. amazing benefits (including 401k matching). Onsite cafe at all locations with HEALTHY food. Reimbursement for school &/or professional development & certifications + bonuses for achieving them. They take talent management plans/reviews very seriously. LOTS of opportunity to move up.. if you are unhappy in one department/team it is possible to transfer to another. Completely paid for wellness events ie mud runs, triathlons, pedometers. Onsite Weight Watchers. And I get to work from home at least once a week… need I say more? Oh.. also there are really really great people who work here who actually want to make a difference.. this isn't the crowd that clocks in.. does what they have to.. and then clocks out.

    Cons

The culture is changing (for the better in my opinion) but there is some tension between people who have been there 10+ years and newer employees. One thing I have a problem with is that since there is so much room for mobility across and up through departments, people are competitive (which isn't necessarily bad) but the people who tend to get noticed are the more outspoken/loud/crazy individuals.. which isn't my personality type.
