Where creativity goes to die

Engineer (Current Employee)
Renton, WA

I have been working at Boeing full-time for more than 5 years

ProsGreat employee benefits such as: community service hours cash matching, cash donation matching, 401K matching, insurance, and a relatively easy process for reimbursing continuing education in technical degrees. Engineering management is pretty generous with "flex time".

Cons1) Parking is horrendous and management refuses to acknowledge the problem. They believe the solution is really only to add more parking stalls further away and parking shuttles.
2) Although it's a big company, it takes way too long to look into moving around into other jobs after 1 year.
3) You very much feel like you have no personal impact to company goals.
4) I get the impression that senior management sees individual employees as expendable, and undercutting the employees to preserve their profit margin for stakeholders. I don't get that from my immediate supervisors however.
5) Too much technical decisions are defaulted to management to make the decision. Many workers don't have a sense of pride or ownership of successes and failures.

Advice to Senior ManagementLead by example: If we are having to pay more for healthcare and you are paying less toward our retirement, shouldn't the executives do so as well? It is probably not a good idea to announce stock increases as you are taking away benefits from your employees via a contract.

Exciting work, de-motivating senior management.

Engineer (Former Employee)
Seattle, WA

I worked at Boeing full-time for more than 10 years

ProsExcellent salary. Outstanding benefits. First level manager cares about employees. Work was interesting.

ConsExecutives care little or none about employees--they are just another widget to use and discard as necessary. Short term decision for immediate profit that cause large issues later on. Difficult to get promoted without changing jobs.

Advice to Senior ManagementRealize that senior engineers have a benefit beyond what you are paying them. You cannot simply move the work to a new location and hire new junior engineers to take over the work.

Great company to work for.

Engineer (Former Employee)
El Paso, TX

I worked at Boeing full-time for more than 10 years

ProsThe work was very rewarding and the coworkers are very dedicated. The salaries are very good; even for a city that doesn't have high salaries. There is a Employee Incentive Program that is very rewarding.

ConsThere wasn't a union at the facility that I worked for, so when it came time for layoffs they went after the oldest and the employees that made the most money. All to drop rates. If there was a union this wouldn't happen. Also, the pension play ends at the end of 2015 taking away a lot of incentive to work there.

Advice to Senior ManagementKeep the talented employees that have worked hard for many years at the company. When layoffs come around get rid of the newer employees that don't have the work experience. This will reward the hard work of the employees that have put decades of hard work into the facility. Also, the facility will be rewarded with high expertise instead of new employees that are struggling because of lack of experience.

Compliance Assurance

Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)

I worked at Boeing full-time for more than 3 years

ProsGreat benefits. Pay is mid-median. Non-managers all get the same bonus which is considerably less than merit-based company bonus programs. Love the product line. Great pride in the mission and commitment to quality.

ConsVery large. Seems to be under the threat of layoff frequently which is a challenge to morale. May transfer your reporting location from north of Seattle to far south of Seattle without options which could add 2 hours to commute.

Advice to Senior ManagementConsider the impact of the constant threat of closing WA ops has on the dedicated non-union work force. You have a lot of great people who believe in the mission. And consider geopolitical risk to relocating skills to countries with political unrest.

One of the better places I have worked. Typical large company atmosphere.

Design Engineer (Current Employee)
Huntington Beach, CA

I have been working at Boeing as a contractor for less than a year

ProsThe people, there are a lot of good minds here with tons of experience. Everyone I have met is willing to help. Good teamwork and attention to detail. The general feeling is a professional work environment without being stuffy. The site is probably a little better than what you expect from a company this size. The work is interesting although not as challenging or leading edge as other places. Benefits are good. Diversity and ethics seems to be a focus. I think anyone would feel comfortable and welcome. They seem to have many active groups for all. The climate is great in SoCal.

ConsFor a lot of people, it could be a pro or con but to me, the pace is a little slow. It could be the area. There are a large amount of people with many years with the company just waiting to retire. This inhibits a willingness to change. Conservative by nature of the product line but management seems to be very slow when it comes to making needed changes. Good place to start and end a career but a millennial or even Gen X might get frustrated.

Advice to Senior ManagementI am not privy to all managements vision but I think there is an awareness of their weaknesses. They seem to be trying. Change is tough but it needs to be done to retain and train a younger workforce that will soon be displacing people as they retire.
