    Pros

    In the beginning, Borders was an amazing company with knowledgeable booksellers, great products and a relaxed, fun atmosphere. My coworkers are still some of my best friends. It was a pleasure to go to work everyday and be around people who were genuinely happy to be there. I started as a music/book seller and held almost every position possible before the liquidation including cafe supervisor and Paperchase supervisor.

    Cons

    Unfortunately, Borders lost focus on customer service, treated its long term employees as expendable and racked up tons of debt. It became nothing more than a vehicle for upper management to bleed all the money they could and then move on. What was the best retail job ever, changed into a place that was only focused on squeezing every dime it could out of its customers.
    It was very painful to see such a wonderful place become pickings for corporate vultures.

    Advice to Management

    No one to advise anymore but if I could, I would tell them to let the booksellers do their jobs, keep up with major trends, stop hiring people into corporate positions who only care about their wallets and pay your debts on time.

    Pros

    Excellent co-workers, decent benefits AT FIRST; including the ability to borrow books, and gift card bonuses. Was briefly an excellent place to work.

    Cons

    Benefits dried up quickly as new management came in, gutted the original feel of the place, and started pushing knick-knacks, clothing, stationary, and all sorts of off brand junk to try and boost sales temporarily before their golden parachutes kicked in.

    Advice to Management

    Not much management or employees can do when word from the top is transparently money grubbing and uncaring about consumer, employee, and the company itself.

    their desperation created some crazy policies - like pushing certain books on every customer. "Make books" - an idea meant to appease publishers Borders owed money to, to prevent them from cutting Borders off completely

    Pros

    It was fun and the Co workers were really great people and I enjoyed going to work to work with my Co workers.

    Really underpaid and along with shutting down I guess the poor choice in management

    Pros

    Relaxed environment and flexibility with schedule. It was fun having the opportunity to stay current with trends in literature.

    Cons

    Corporate management didn't seem to know how to best run the company and keep it in business. They were clearly not listening to their associates on the selling floor who had day-to-day interactions with the customer base. Several marketing and product campaigns fell flat because they were tone-deaf.

    Pros

    The workplace was fun, interesting and your customers were shared your interest in books.

    Cons

    As in all retail, the hours are tough on the family and a few customers are rude and demanding.
