    Advice to Management

    Pros

There was a lot of freedom at the store before the decline. Staff worked as a team. Pro book, pro book lover environment.

    Cons

When times started getting tough, corporate management started to pull back from the laid back, book centric approach.

    Advice to Management

most managers tried to keep the feeling at the store level the same in the face of all of the corporate changes. Mike Edwards inherited all of the problems, economic and morale, created by Ron Marshall.

I worked at Borders full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Employee discount, freedom to move about the store and answer questions/engage in conversations with people who enjoy reading!

    Cons

Low pay (even for supervisors and managers), little autonomy when it came to merchandising strategies, no store/company events.

    Advice to Management

You should have listened to your employees instead of dictating their every move. Simple things like merchandising - employees could have some say in some (not all) end-caps, but no table displays. People who enjoy reading work for borders, they may have had an idea what other readers would enjoy.

  6. A great place to work

    Pros

The store is a great place to work in any capacity. Most of the employees have been there for years or spend their entire working life there.

    Cons

There is just not enough time to get involved in all of the programs that are offered and that contribute to the community.

    Advice to Management

Keep doing an excellent job motivating the staff and providing excellent customer service.

  7. general manager

I worked at Borders full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

    Surrounded by books and readers; diverse taskwork;

    Cons

Last few years revolving door of CEO's, management by fear, and eventual bankruptcy

    Advice to Management

    Too late. Company dissolved.

I worked at Borders part-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Great people, great atmosphere. Made a lot of friends while working here, and honed my skills as a barista at Seattle's Best Cafe. Awesome co-workers, and management was great, overall. This was my favorite job, because I actually had fun at work.

    Cons

The only con is that they closed.

I worked at Borders part-time (More than a year)

    Pros

I worked stocking the shelves and being that I have a detail-oriented personality, I found great satisfaction in helping to make the retail location look its best.

    Cons

Store closing at the end of the night could be very tedious as some employees took more time than others to finish their duties. To be delayed in leaving because someone else did not keep up as they were supposed to is one small con. What's a huge con is that some employees would stand and stare rather than help to get us all out of the store sooner.

    Advice to Management

I would take measures to make sure that all are held accountsable for their cooperation across departments at the end of each night.
