I have been working at Boston Beer

    Pros

Though the company is becoming slightly more structured, senior management has always been wary of bureaucracy. As such, practices are frequently changed as opportunities surface. This means that if you find a way of doing your job effectively and yearning for more (or different) responsibility, you can carve out a niche for yourself if you make an effective value proposition.

    Cons

The lack of structure (or competing structures) leads to some levels of disorganization and can add stress to the job. While some people will work 70 hours a week in order to keep a process moving, others work a straightforward 40 hour week. If you aren't someone that can effectively advocate for yourself, your career growth, and what you bring to the table in an area with little structure, you will have a hard time moving up.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Prioritize cultural fit when hiring managers and senior managers.

Great perks and great training, but young managers

    Pros

The training, the perks, and the job are second to none. For someone looking to get the most from a post undergrad job, BBC is the place.

    Cons

Managers tend to be young and inexperienced. That can lead to high turnover, and some interesting situations. If you get lucky, you can ride the train for a great few years. If you find yourself on the other side, consider looking for a new geography or a new company. Just remember all of the great skills you learned at BBC.

    Pros

    Best training in the business

    Cons

low paying, beginning to become micromanaging, can only move up if you are willing to relocate

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Trust your employees to run their own business again! Work to keep high performers who can't relocate. The culture of this company is changing for the worse.

I worked at Boston Beer full-time

    Pros

A job at Sam Adams is something to be proud of. It's a good company with great values and an exceptional product. They take what they do very seriously and the teamwork is unparallelled. The work is hard but rewarding, and they really focus on cross training so most everyone there is able to operate most of the machines when called upon. The pay is very good, especially when you consider the OT they require. The communication between management and the floor personnel is excellent, there is no barrier, but that doesn't mean that management listens to much of what the rank and file has to say. This is a lifetime job for those who can handle the OT. You could very easily work there for 20 years and retire comfortably.

    Cons

You work there, you live there. They expect unlimited availability. It's not uncommon for employees to work 7 days a week, especially during the busier times. A month with one day off is not unusual. This leads to grumpy employees, but it also leads to massive paychecks. They have something called a "force list" which is posted weekly and it determines who is going to be forced (their word) to work Saturday and/or Sunday or stay 4 extra hours at the end of your shift and the lower your number, the more likely it is you're not getting many days off. It's a great job for a single person, but for anyone with kids, especially a single parent (me), it's pretty near impossible to work there and have any time for your kids. The Breinigsville facility is also extremely cramped as the production has very much outgrown the facility. Then there's the usual production drawbacks, it's really hot in the summer and pretty cold in the winter, but that shouldn't be an issue to anyone with any kind of experience with this kind of job.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Stop putting in more lines! Someone is going to get seriously hurt!

I worked at Boston Beer full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

People make this company; strong bond within team is a huge plus and helps when things are extremely crazy (almost always); open communication between levels of the company, as well as sales and breweries; free beer and other perks; senior management (namely Martin Roper) very smart and a good leader; a lot of work to do...which means both good opportunities (if you can find the time/work even more hours) and/or it becomes life consuming

    Cons

Poor internal systems and processes (both IT and people) - some attempt to upgrade; compensation is below the expected hours to work; corporate mobility is limited - big chasm between director-level and entry/mid level employees; seem to make same/similar mistakes consistently - partially due to fast pace work environment and "get it done" attitude which limits learning and revising processes for the future. Sales slightly rogue from corporate direction (very much to do with communication issues, geographical difference, and amount of work/expectations on them).

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Review and align company strategies with goals, metrics, and compensation for all levels of the company. When a strategy is decided (say - "Lead with Lager") don't *wink* after the fact and say a different brand is really the priority.

    Pros

Great enthusiasm and energy, company has a great origin story, founder very involved with business and brand, fans of the company are some of the best!

    Cons

poor management and communication between departments, constantly battling a hush hush environment surrounding new products which makes it very difficult to feel connected to the brand, can be clique-y, policies seem to change every week without notice or explanation.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Communicate to your employees more about the mission and current goals of the organization. More transparency where transitions or changes involved.

I have been working at Boston Beer

    Pros

The people are super friendly and nice. The bosses are really easy going and great to work for.

    Cons

The lack of communication that exists sometimes is awful. Some people are told one thing and other people are told something completely different.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Better communication through email in getting the correct info out to the employees. The PR department can help make certain details more readily available and accurate to the entire company.
