I have been working at Boston Scientific full-time (less than an year)

    Pros

Good work environment with good benefits and okay pay. People are accepting, depending on the line and department that is.

    Cons

Very political and cliquish. Some people, especially managers, are quick to choose favorites and make it known. Very seldom come through on promises and raises upon career advancement.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Give workers the chance for advancement and better chances at a raise. The product builders do know what they work with and what works best. Don't fix what isn't broken simply because it looks good on paper. Also, standard work is crap.

    Pros

Location, cost of living, quality of personal life

    Cons

Poor communication, little collaboration, no challenge to status quo, office culture poor, like an old boys club, no freedom to speak up,

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Communicate and collaborate strategy and long-term plan, start looking more closely at activities of senior "leaders"

    I worked at Boston Scientific

    Pros

    Talented workforce
Guidant and Scimed had innovative histories
Broadly based, but overly dependent on aging market segments (commodities)

    Cons

Risk adverse senior management playing only for their personal gain
    Don't understand current marketplace
Short-term focus means survival by layoffs
    Ancient board needs to go

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Ask Mahoney to read the Credo to you and think about following it, since J&J will own you soon.

    Pros

They have a matching funds 401K program. The middle management from Ireland are down to earth people, they have serious but reasonable expectations for project completions.

    Cons

Senior management has questionable veracity; they acquire a company promise to continue operations at the US site and then shortly afterward announce that they are moving the operation to Ireland.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Learn to create a true culture of innovation within the corporation. Acquisitions are expensive; to leap frog other medical device companies stop focusing on short term payoff thereby forsaking the future. Maybe take some lessons from Apple, or Japanese management.

I worked at Boston Scientific full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

Good machine work so most departments are not manual. Pay was good especially when you got overtime. Work was usually pretty consistent.

    Cons

Could not get a lot of days off. No room for growth. Managers expect a lot from you and when you meet high expectations there is very little recognition. You are a treated as a number and not a person at times. Some managers are very distant from their employees.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Let employees have an opportunity to move up in the company. Listen to the product builders suggestions they work with the product everyday they know it just better than most managers. Get issues or bugs fixed in the machine immediately. Communicate better what issues you have with employees one on one. Give good workers who have been there for a few years better than a 30 cent raise.

    Pros

Good company with a good mission.

    Cons

Awful, narrow minded senior management. Only care about cutting costs, don't care about employees or employee growth at all. Will erode vendor relations without blinking an eye as long as it saves money. Loyalty and quality means nothing to them.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Fix the office culture.

I have been working at Boston Scientific full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Good work life balance. But it's the only pro. I do like my team, but they are leaving one by one.

    Cons

Only promote those in the 'inner circle'. A person's experience or expertise has no bearing. In many cases, upper management 'leadership' has no expertise and no experience in the job. Intimidation from other groups who don't want to follow regs. No support from upper management.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

You must support your people! Hold people accountable.

    Pros

    Good products, pleasant office environment

    Cons

Good old boys culture...limited career opportunities unless you are one of the few in the club, no meaningful or transparent succession planning. Poor management continues to keep stock price depressed for many many years. Morale is low, layoffs to squeeze more and more from existing employees.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Create transparency in hiring process and compensation to ensure there is no discrimination or preferential treatment. Figure out why the stock price continues to be low and fix it, this should be the #1 priority.
