Numbers, numbers, numbers

Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

I have been working at Boston Scientific full-time for more than 3 years

ProsThis was a company created to help people, co-workers. Good benefits, 401(k) match is good. New products make you feel like this place makes a difference.

ConsNumbers, numbers, numbers. Too busy trying to squeeze blood out of turnips. Plans to offshore more jobs. Near zero promotions except for select favorites. Mid-management tier in-experienced and refuses to admit to errors or they lack knowledge. Old - boys network/old fashioned management practices.

Advice to Senior ManagementStop outsourcing to other countries, follow your own code of conduct.

No, I would not recommend this company to a friend – I'm not optimistic about the outlook for this company

Turning into a sweat shop. People are great but highly overworked.

Specialist (Current Employee)
Natick, MA

I have been working at Boston Scientific full-time for more than 3 years

ProsThe people are very smart and great to work with. Everyone works hard and is focused on the company vision. Salary is OK but not great. Benefits are pretty standard. The new CEO is moving things in the right direction but sacrificing morale and culture to meet targets.

ConsLayoffs and acquisitions haven't helped the culture. Company culture remains an issue. Everyone is under resourced, working long hours, and getting burned out. There is no work life balance.

Advice to Senior ManagementStop cutting resources. Focus on sales growth.

Arrogant and inexperienced management

Senior R&D Engineer (Current Employee)
Los Angeles, CA

I have been working at Boston Scientific full-time for more than 3 years

ProsGood benefits, average salary, well equipped with good tools.

ConsInexperienced management not willing to push the limits. Aversion to be innovative and be the first to market. Ok with being number two on the market. Also management runs roughshod over the R&D staff in dealing with with sensitive issues. Talented staff is highly underutilized.

Advice to Senior ManagementWake up and smell the coffee. It is not ok to be number two. Utilize your staff and experienced personnel well.

Worthwhile - I got, they got.

Principal Architect (Current Employee)
Natick, MA

I have been working at Boston Scientific full-time for more than 10 years

Prosable to spread into any area directly connected to current position. They will take all you willing give.

Consexpectations often unreasonable; required to get the job done regardless .... Family, time off, health are simply secondary to the project meeting its deadlines.

Advice to Senior Managementfreewheeling on projects shows in maintenance costs. Saying a project came in "on-time" and "on budget" has nothing to do with the system going live without major issues, doing what the business wants.

Lots of little perks as pros - but a few big let-downs as cons

Consultant (Former Employee)
Arden Hills, MN

I worked at Boston Scientific as a contractor for less than a year

ProsAmple parking, car-pools with company vans, great cafeteria, bi-monthly employee appreciation lunches, on-site dry cleaning, great new-hire training, and the calm measured pace to work and processes, free beverages, and a better than average compensation as a local consultant.

ConsNone of my team leads NOR hiring manager is still around as references after three years, and my hiring manager mislead me about the contract project duration during the hiring process. I was told I had a six-twelve month PO(purchase order), but I could tell from the project scheduling once I started that I would only get three-four months on the PO.

Advice to Senior ManagementWill the company ever become profitable after the ill conceived acquisition of Guidant ???

Average compensation for industry
Lack of diversity (race and gender)

If you want a family life, don't consider Boston Sci

Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)
Saint Paul, MN

I worked at Boston Scientific full-time for more than 3 years

ProsGreat benefit. In fact one of the highest matching for 401-k and a chance to earn decent bonus. Upward mobility is there for many positions. If you work in some of the business function areas, attitude is probably better.

ConsLike many other corporate peers, BosSci is not immune to demand more and more of their employee pool. The problem is that even though individual contributors and managers are asked to give it all, the reward is often not there during the annual review. You will get promoted but that will be the justification to work more and longer. Even you WYAO, you might get put into Improvement Needed category. People who has the passion of balancing their lives are often labeled as non-leadership material as they don't share the passion. The IT functions has a distinct feeling of being run like Accenture - devoid of any loyalty and compassion. Most projects are often run to meet some dates which in turn result into poor solutions and myriad of problems for others to handle, after they go live. More and more interns, college grads are being asked to contribute, which in turn leading to a high turn over at a very early age group in the corporate culture. Just look at any given moment, how many positions, this company is trying to hire. Directors and up will keep on passing the buck and are not accountable for a miserable landscape and completely detached from the reality. Bottom line, if you don't mind, giving it all for few years, then probably this is the place. But don't expect a family to wait around to share the outcome.

Advice to Senior ManagementStop being all about lip service.

Boston Scientific, a two edged sword

Principal Engineer (Former Employee)
Saint Paul, MN

I worked at Boston Scientific full-time for more than 10 years

ProsThe technical staff of BSC is top-notch. Their dedication and experience is comparable or exceeds that of other medical device companies.

ConsThe current business environment within BSC is characterized by the continuing employment uncertainties. BSC is not an innovator from within. It is a company the simply purchases innovation from others and then applies its bundensome internal procedures to attempt to develop something for commercialization. This speaks volumes to the top-notch , dediated and experienced technical staff remaining at BSC.

Advice to Senior ManagementStabilize the employment environment. Listen to your technical people and let them do their jobs. Do not hold the employment of current management sacred. It may be entirely possible that the current business problems encountered by BSC are the result of current management and not those targeted for lay-off.
