    Wasted years

    Vice President (Former Employee)
    Atlanta, GA

ProsThe best reason to work at Bowne was it had a good reputation. It was the oldest company on the American Stock Exchange and one of the oldest in the country having been founded by Robert Bowne in 1775.

ConsNumerous. Disastrous leadership, poor coordination between branches, poor cooperation between branches, afraid to commit to new technology which ultimately killed the company. They were selling buggy whips.

Advice to Senior ManagementGo find a new job because you ran the company into the ground.

No, I would not recommend this company to a friend – I'm not optimistic about the outlook for this company

Decent first job to learn customer service

    Project Coordinator (Former Employee)
    Atlanta, GA

ProsFast paced environment during proxy and filing season. IPOs, M&A documents you could sense the importance of them. Work with high level customers - attorneys, CXOs, investment bankers.

Family environment, made some good friends. Some good mentors for me at the time were there.

ConsNot much room to grow and increase salary. Slow to change, they do printing after all, fading medium..

    Great pay, lousy management

    Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)
    Atlanta, GA

ProsBowne had a generally good work environment. Most co-workers were fine; some were excellent at their jobs and had been with the company 20-plus years. The pay was very good.

ConsManagement let the slackers get away with murder. My immediate supervisor had a horribly entitled attitude, and was quite "clique-ish" with a couple of my co-workers which made my immediate environment sometimes unpleasant.
In 2008 most of the staff was laid off because of outsourcing, automation, and financial problems.

Advice to Senior ManagementBowne has been taken over by another company. I would advise them to hire supervisors who pay attention to what is going on around them.

    Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)
    Kent, WA

Proslong, stable company (1 year older than the USA).
    Financialy sound.
    Good benefits.

Consmany communcations problems. On the surface it looks like they communcate well, but lack in substantive lower level communcations.
Where given directives with no assistance to carry them out, or whom to contact.
Branch left hung out to dry with no sales for future work support.

    Advice to Senior ManagementCommunicate.

    Summer Analyst

    Analyst-Summer (Former Employee)
    New York, NY

ProsThe location is great....located right in downtown Manhattan on Water St blocks from Wall St. The hours weren't awful either.

ConsSalaries were not as competitive as advertised. The work is very dull and unimportant, a bunch of programing and filing.

Advice to Senior ManagementOffer highers employee incentive bonuses. Put more money into recruiting and less into executive compensation. More seminars and employee involvement.

    Huge Corporation

    Typesetter (Former Employee)
    New York, NY

    ProsSolid benefits.

Solid training department. Training & learning materials are updated constantly and easily attainable. Trainers are highly competent and actually teach, as opposed to just regurgitating outlines or throwing a manual at you and telling you to read it.

Bowne has protocol for work processes that emphasize consistency and organization in the daily workflow. On the composition side, at least, the workflow is pretty streamlined. There is a lot less confusion than at other printers.

ConsDepartments can be somewhat compartmentalized so that you are stuck doing limited tasks. For example, typesetters rarely get to edit or manipulate graphics. Also, all the XBRL work is oursourced in its entirety and there doesn't seem to be any plans to train people on this type of work in offices like New York.

While the workflow protocols are extremely helpful in streamlining and maintaining order, it can mean a lot of red tape in getting a simple task done.

IT services has been outsourced. God help you if you have computer, database, access or networking issues.

The BIGGEST CON of all: Typesetting is pretty much a dead trade; the printing industry is dying; the financial industry is in the toilet and has changed forever. Typesetting in a printing environment for the financial industry? That's 3 strikes. Bowne has an extensive offshore typesetting repository. Most of the work is farmed out.

Advice to Senior ManagementYou can not outsource EVERYTHING and ENTIRE departments all together and still expect to maintain a high, or even a decent, level of service.

    Not bad place to work

    Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)
    New York, NY

ProsSince the job is located in New York City I like the location even though I commute from New Jersey

ConsJob security is non existing. Financial industry has crashed and jobs are being lost left and right. Need to improve on training for future.

Advice to Senior Managementget a clue. Need to be more involved with employees. Training training training. Why not spend money and retrain current staff.

In the battle between culture and strategy, culture won.

    Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)

ProsFamily-type culture. One of the most open and welcoming work environments I've ever experienced. Invested significantly in leadership development, to the benefit of its employees.

ConsNow defunct. This company was sales-driven to a fault. Struggled mightily to keep up with changes in the marketplace because of entrenched interests determined to maintain the status quo.

Advice to Senior ManagementA little less greed, a little more conscience, would suit leaders better.

No, I would not recommend this company to a friend

Kind of stressful work with a confusing system and not much respect from managrs

    Proofreader (Former Employee)

ProsSome of the people there are good people and some are not great but the ones that are good really help you. Great job for someone starting out.

ConsNo effort to help people work out their schedules and they just fire you if you can't do it theyre way even if you had kids not saying I do.

Advice to Senior ManagementWell the company is gone now so I guess I hope the managers can learn to respect people as people in theyre new jobs.
