It was very good in the early years (Till 2003) but last few years were pretty bumpy

Manager Technical Services (Former Employee)
Atlanta, GA

I worked at Bowne

ProsMostly people doesn't want to leave. Bowne family thing was very strong. Lots of learning opprtunities. Free parking, good benifits. I had some excellet bosses.

ConsVery conservative about new technology. Field I.T. had very little say in the matters. Outsourcing I.T. was a very hasty decision. Other employees were not happy by this moves.

Advice to Senior ManagementThis was a specialized business model. And earlier management were very close to the employees. But the new management has a disconnect with low level employees. If they bring back previous good managers and start from basic, it could turn out to be a very good company again.

The place where I learned everything

Project Coordinator (Former Employee)
New York, NY

I worked at Bowne

ProsLearned a lot about systems and corporate culture at Bowne. Great mentoring from my direct supervisor. Benefits were good, pay OK, plenty of opportunity for overtime, good group of co-workers.

ConsCareer growth is difficult. A larger company, you have to wait your turn on line for promotion. Also, it helps to be part of a "crew." There are several cliques that are led by upper and middle managers. Those crews always favor their own when it comes to promotion.

Good company; too easily duped

Analyst (Current Employee)

I have been working at Bowne

ProsThe opportunity to succeed at Bowne exists and is encouraged by management. Lots and lots of talented employees can be found throughout the workforce. Senior management refuses to roll over and die when times get tough. Bowne is an equal opportunity employer and a true melting pot -- especially in NY.

ConsSenior management is easily seduced by buzz words and vaporware. Middle management is loathe to disagree with higher ups for fear of being marginalized or downsized. This toxic environment coupled with constant reorganization leads to the same mistakes being repeated over and over at the cost of millions of dollars and talented personnel. Outsourcing is too heavily relied upon and could result in serious backlash with privacy/security concerns as well as questions about patriotism.

Advice to Senior ManagementTrust your seasoned veterans to give good advice, especially those without "Mgr" in their title. They've been in the trenches a long time and have seen fads come and go. Reinvest in current technology instead of trying to "buy the golden goose" that doesn't really exist.

Great place to get experience to move on

Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)

I worked at Bowne

ProsCasual work environment, collegial, learning opportunities

Conspay was pretty low, and raises were borderline offensive, esp. when receiving above average performance reviews...If you're too good at what you do, it's hard to get them to let you try and move up within the org.

Advice to Senior ManagementNothing to say, the place was sold. Hope you enjoyed your fat paychecks after the sale to RRD, no one left is enjoying the transition.

Employees treated well

Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)

I worked at Bowne

ProsGood pay, good benefits, employees treated well. small company feel

Overall, I had a positive experience with the company, wish they weren't acquired

ConsPolitics, Management did not always recognize and deal with issues of poor performance. Towards the end of the company there were a lot of cut backs and layoffs which lead to a decline in employee morale.

Advice to Senior ManagementBecause the company is now owned by RR Donnelly, there is really not a whole lot to say. I wish them well

Bowne & Co.

Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)

I worked at Bowne

ProsThe company is very laid back and you create your work given from leads at have been created. Very competitive because senior works generally have the better clients but shouldn't worry too much. Few different management teams but overall very helpful and let you run with what you have and give great suggest if you would work with another person to close the deal.

ConsIt's a difficult job. Your first big sale won't come for a couple years. You have to stay focus and push though it. This job isn't for some without patience

Advice to Senior Managementthe management is very involved which is good, but also lets the sales exe. do their own thing. Overall management team is positive

Financial Communications - Project Coordinator

Project Coordinator (Current Employee)

I have been working at Bowne

ProsIt is a fast-paced environment and can be stressful at times, but if you put the work in the rewards can be satisfying. This is not a typical 9-5, mind-numbing job. You will be challenged daily and if you have the smarts you can advance through the organisation.

ConsThe hours can be long and unsociable sometimes, and include shift work. When the financial markets are riding high, you may work 18 hours a day, seven days a week.

Advice to Senior ManagementCorporate marketing need to do a better job at making sure we communicate our strengths to employees and clients alike. We used to be very unified with the 'Bowne Values' campaign, but since budgets and head-count were cut in marketing that seems to have dissipated.
