    I worked at Boyd Gaming

    Pros

    Fun place in central Illinois.

    Cons

Some true professionals are true professionals and others are corrupt or have very poor management styles. The core beliefs are not upheld by all of top management. Non-smoking and opening up video games to public venues has taken its toll. A company is only as good as the person/s leading it,,,without their integrity you have no good foundation.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Let conscience, not money or greed be your guide. Do what you know is right in your heart...you'll feel good and it has a positive trickle-down effect!

I have been working at Boyd Gaming full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Use to be the benefits, more so now, the co-workers. Hard to be terminated from your job.

    Cons

Business mentality of the 1980's, very little accountability in executive management for poor decisions. Entry level employes treated poorly due to lack of longevity. Same managers in the same job for years causing massive group think. Unwilling to take constructive criticism from employees that would help grow the business, see the useless employee survey as an example. The company is rampant with favoritism and cronyism.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Your salary should be $1 a year until the business turns a profit for 4 straight quarters, remember Lee Iaccoca? You value longevity and loyalty to a fault at the shareholders expense. Eliminate under performers who have thrived for years in a culture of entitlement based on seniority. Get out of the 1980 mentality "its all about gambling" and shift marketing to the development of non-gaming assets.

    Pros

Pay is OK benefits good but pricey, OT available in buffet

    Cons

No breaks except your 30 minute paid lunch.work every holiday with no extra pay and no chance of getting any of them off to be with family. They do not value their employeesno matter how hard you work. They pick favorites to get promoted.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Promote those who work hard and have good attitudes. Show appreciation for those who work hard for you by paying more for holidays, offering bonuses and giving free food to employees more often. Most of us do not feel appreciated.

I worked at Boyd Gaming full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Property is usually clean, they provide employee meals while on shift and have standard PTO accumulation.

    Cons

Management is abusive and it almost felt like it was an employee against management war. When I exposed wrongdoing to the corporate office, they launched an investigation & found the allegations against management to be true. Management made life at work very hard and hostile to myself and others involved until we quit or they could fire us. They maliciously marked anyone who left "Non rehireable" (so now we cant ever apply at any other BOYD property ) because we exposed things about management.

Never even did anything against policy.....Terrible company.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Hire managers that are leaders, not ones who abuse power and have t prove "they are in charge"

I have been working at Boyd Gaming (less than a year)

    Pros

The customers are extremely nice, the casino is well lit, the smoke isn't too noticeable, they promote from within, and have a minimal amount of meetings outside of regular work hours.

    Cons

The pay is very low which contributes to high turnover. Management is inconsistent as to how they treat the dealers and supervisors. Also, one of the shift managers really changes their attitude towards dealers and supervisors when customers are winning (this person sweats the money). The company also sent a letter to employees telling us how to vote in the upcoming election which I do not think is appropriate.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Be more consistent towards employees, and consider a higher pay scale to keep the turnover rate down. Also, do not allow employees to gamble at the property they work for. I do not see what good can come from letting your employees gamble at their current property.

    Pros

I really enjoy my coworkers and lower level management. They make you feel appreciated if you put in the work. Good communication between team members and management.

    Cons

Constantly taking away benefits. Taking away paid time off, can't request extra (unpaid) days off, took away early outs for when it's slow, randomly making new blackout periods for time off, and in my department they just try to make you not want to work here anymore. They are constantly taking away any happiness from employees. Also considered "late" if you clock in when your shift starts. Required to work more than 8 hours and only get paid for 8.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Stop taking away benefits because the morale has fallen off a cliff in recent times.

    Pros

Good pay and benefits, room for advancement.

    Cons

Even though they say their policy is not to "sweat the money", it happens frequently. Too often a person in an upper management position will have either no casino experience or they are "old school" casino people. At times it reminded me of some of the Hollywood depictions of how a casino is run. Even though Boyd is well known in Nevada for being of a different caliber from the old mob run casinos, don't believe everything you hear. I am not talking about broken limbs, but rather ethics.

I worked at Boyd Gaming full-time (more than a year)

    Pros

Work-life balance (for now, but management is pushing people to expect longer days), some team members, the Boyd family

    Cons

Negative work environment, no recognition, top-heavy, no one seems to really care what the lower level employees feel.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Start listening to the people who do the most work for you. The executives don't care, stop pretending. Review your benefit programs, and it might be wise to return many of the benefits lost over the preceding years, employees are not happy about that. Stop FORCING United Way; let it be something employees do if they choose, but it would be even better if you added some other local charity options and maybe even honor 8 hours paid to volunteer as you choose any time during the year for the community.

    Pros

    Boydgaming is a good company

    Cons

There are cons for delta downs mainly for cocktails manger bully supervisor bully favoritism no professionals they yell at you in front of patrons everydays a risk when you come to work i did nothing came to work one the next there were a bunch of lies about me and i was fired cause they let the click girls rule the swing shift

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

There is no confidentiality there if you go to manager with problem can't go to HR about problem next thing you know everyone knows put a stop to bulling from manger team over cocktails let cocktails know the ones that are not the favorites don't be scared to lose your job everyday before you come to work if you speak up for yourself. I've worked for casinos 16 yrs and I've never seen managers and supervisers so unqualified as I've seen at delta downs for cocktails

I worked at Boyd Gaming full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Best co-workers I have ever had the chance to work with.

    Cons

The pay they are willing to offer current and new prospects are minimal at its best and do not compete with other companies in the same industry. I have several degrees and certifications under my belt actually related to the field I was working in and still was offered less than $40k. That's a $15,000-$20,000 differential from the average pay at other companies. Job titles are a suggestion, not really pertaining to what you do, which is everything they ask you to do. Raises are a joke, benefits or bonuses are non-existent, and the quality of life is abysmal considering the amount of time and effort that you put in. Short-staffed, more work, less pay. That's what you get when you work here and that is the "Boyd Style".

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

There are too many bodies in upper management. Re-evaluate the priorities a little. We all understand that the bottom line is to make money but try to think about those who are trying to help you achieve that goal and keep the business going. No one is really happy here, but you wouldn't know that because there is very little interaction and communication. How about bringing the brand to a more upscale level and delivering better quality products. The Echelon would've been a good starting point, oh well. Also, the company should start supporting the LGBT community! Even the competitors: Caesars Entertainment, MGM Resorts, and Wynn Resorts are in with the program.
