I enjoyed my internship but I could have received a little more out of it.

I worked at Boys & Girls Clubs as an intern (less than an year)

    Pros

The company values are great and everyone is really committed to their jobs and the company's mission. Working for a non-profit can be difficult but BCG makes it worthwhile.

    Cons

As an intern, I learned a lot but there was a lack of clear direction. The organization and future interns would benefit from a more structured internship program.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Create a nationwide internship program to motivate college students to get involved with the Boys & Girls Clubs either as an employee or volunteer.

I worked at Boys & Girls Clubs full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

You will have an opportunity to connect with many people within the organization. The mission to develop underserved youth is an admirable endeavor. You will feel rewarded knowing that you are a part of such an important initiative. It has a very strong connection in regards to representation nationwide including celebrity support.

    Cons

The salaries are less than desirable in my opinion. I also think there is a disproportion in pay for the same positions among employees. Preferential treatment among some circles of leadership and limited growth opportunities. There is a disproportion of diversity in leadership positions. Rural Clubs are not as well supported as metropolitan Clubs You have to drink the Kool-Aid!

I have been working at Boys & Girls Clubs full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

The organization and its employees believe in the mission. The ability to see the change you bring about in youth is an amazing experience. People work here for the children, which is how it should be.

    Cons

Pay wasn't the best. Professional development was lacking. Not much room for growth. Local organizations need to understand that investing in your employees brings on positive change and development.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Advocate for those who serve you. Invest in your employees education, the return will be worth it.

Interesting place to work.... Kids plus community make for interesting work environment

I have been working at Boys & Girls Clubs part-time (less than an year)

    Pros

The kids that attend are quite entertaining and fellow staff care about child welfare as a top priority. A good place to to experience lots of different cultures in a safe controlled environment. Management that works in office is able to relate to staff better than out of office management.

    Cons

Working with a wide age gap between some levels of management and employees can cause some clashing. Also some of the children that attend are not ready or able to attend care outside of parental care. Alarming number of kid to staff ratio can be kind of hectic at times.
