    Pros

I love working with kids so this was a fun job. You get to plan activities for the members. You get to go on fieldtrips with them, and you get to become their role model.

    Cons

It gets hard when the members are having behavior issues. The pay isn't that great.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Pros

Everyone in this organization believes in the mission of enabling all young people, especially those who need us most, to reach their full potential as productive, caring, responsible citizens. You work on fundraising events and learn about the programs that help the children that go there. It really makes a difference in these kids lives.

    Cons

There really isn't any advancement opportunities and there is no compensation for interns and volunteers. It's quite a bit of work and you have to be patient.

I worked at Boys & Girls Clubs part-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

The staff is really organized and efficient, you will always know your hours weeks ahead of time and what activities your'll be doing. There are also staff meetings to make sure everyone has the same goals and objectives. There is alot of hands on interaction with the kids that you can choose to make the best out of. Children are so entertaining when you sit down and talk to them. There is a strong sense of community so after a while you will start to feel like you're a community staple yourself, which is great because you never know what kind of connections you could be making. Become a kid's hero and their mom just might offer you a job, happened for me.

    Cons

You have to have an assertive but tender personality. For safety and health reasons the children have to respect your authority and listen. But if they're scared of you they won't want to come and parents will be upset. It takes the right personality. Spending alot of time with kids can aggravate you if you are not a children person. They are also really stingy raises and definitely promotions. It's a great stepping stool into other jobs though.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Retention rates will never be that strong if you refuse to give people raises and promotions. Provide opportunities for further education.
