Heavy focus on pushing students into class

Enrollment Advisor (Former Employee)
San Diego, CA

I worked at Bridgepoint Education full-time for less than a year

ProsThe sales staff/Enrollment Advisors are hard working, intelligent, fun, upcoming young professionals. Earning potential can be very good.

ConsBridgepoint accreditation has been called into question because they are targeting financially challenged students that want financial aid possibly more than a degree. The focus is to sign up students and sign up student loans. Retention is an issue, and one that in 2013 called into question the school's WASC accreditation. WASC was looking at retention and the percentage of students using student loans to fund their education. A Student Retention team was created in 2013 to assist in keeping students in class. Once WASC accreditation was reinstated, 95% of the team was fired. This seems short sited.

Advice to Senior ManagementTake a more collaborative approach to engaging your team in goals. The more you treat your counselors as colleagues that can help you solve your revenue goals, the more success you will have. Have senior members work more directly with newer members. Management using tactics like advising counselors Saturdays are mandatory overtime, when in reality are completely voluntary is insulting. Incorporate the idea of work life balance. Employees that feel like only labor laws are saving them from working 24 hour shifts are not happy employees.

Scam!

Admissions Counselor (Former Employee)
San Diego, CA

I worked at Bridgepoint Education full-time for less than a year

ProsCollege-feel environment which is great for younger employees when it comes to making friends and enjoying coworkers' company.

ConsLies all over. Managers are afraid to lose their jobs, counselors do not know how to cheat the system, turnover is crazy, etc..

Advice to Senior ManagementINTEGRITY!

No, I would not recommend this company to a friend – I'm not optimistic about the outlook for this company

Definitely profit driven.

Admissions Counselor (Former Employee)
San Diego, CA

I worked at Bridgepoint Education full-time for less than a year

ProsGreat pay with great benefits.

ConsIt's a call center that makes you dial hundreds of phone numbers a day in hopes that you can convince someone to enroll in Ashford University's online number. Most of these end in hang ups, harassment complaints, and no answers.

Advice to Senior ManagementI really liked the team I was placed on, and my leads and manager, but above them, it just feels like your not doing enough to get a hold of better leads.

good potential wasted by bad management

Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)
San Diego, CA

I have been working at Bridgepoint Education full-time for more than 3 years

ProsThey are generous with salaries and till recently the health benefits were really good, if you wanted you could get a degree without tuition.

ConsBad culture / environment. A lot of hierarchy. Legal and compliance run everything. Paranoia. Everyone afraid to make a mistake, afraid of the next round of layoffs. Can't get VPs or Executives to listen to new ideas.

Advice to Senior ManagementListen to us! Stop trying to control everything and let the regular workers make some decisions on our own.

And our products aren't very competitive, no matter what the marketing says. So start building better classrooms and technology, or else other schools will leave us in the dust.

Prosfriendships that I fostered within entire organization.

ConsLeadership from Managers to Directors on up the chain. They are all puppets to wmaking more money for the Share Holders.

Advice to Senior ManagementGive resources to non-admissions departments. Train the admissions management on how to manage their people. COACH, COACH, COACH not do mass terminations.

Leadership is has no plans to share direction and you are alone for the ride.

Senior Systems Engineer (Current Employee)
San Diego, CA

I have been working at Bridgepoint Education full-time for more than 3 years

ProsThere are some educational benefits to working at Bridgepoint. The IT environment is robust in comparison to other companies in the San Diego area.

ConsThe IT leadership is generally clueless about where we are going as a department. They have claimed to be out of business decisions publicly. This means that the executive staff does not think about impact to the IT department before making decisions and the IT leadership doesn't interject until the money is spent and the project is rolling. All in all, IT is always the loser in the fight and made to look like the failures.

Advice to Senior ManagementTake control of the department and force groups to move in the same direction.

Telemarketing Company in Disguise

Military Admissions Counselor (Former Employee)
San Diego, CA

I worked at Bridgepoint Education full-time for more than a year

ProsGreat pay, great working hours (M-F). You have your own cubical and can decorate it how every you choose. Good tuition program for employees.

ConsYou are a telemarketer, not a counselor. You have to meet a quota or you will get fired. Managers and Directors are having extramarital affairs, lots of favoritism-so those people get better treatment. Very difficult to transfer out of the Admissions Department.

Advice to Senior ManagementSet a better example. If you know that a counselor has great potential, give him/her a better opportunity by recommending them for other positions.

Company is in turmoil.

Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)
San Diego, CA

I have been working at Bridgepoint Education full-time for more than a year

ProsEducation benefit, healthcare benefits, people are great to work with

ConsCompany is in turmoil, silo mentality, departments do not share information, CEO and senior management are not visible, managers are inexperienced and not mentored.

Advice to Senior ManagementFocus on long term goals and culture of the organization. Show appreciation for employees and start communicating with all levels of staff. Be more visible.

CEO running company into the ground

Software Engineer (Current Employee)
San Diego, CA

I have been working at Bridgepoint Education full-time for more than 5 years

ProsIn general the employees are good people who you'd be happy to work/socialize with.

ConsThe CEO is making decisions just to save his job, and not helping the company move forward in any one of a dozen directions that it could be going in.

* 10% Annual RIF
* Budget cuts
* Training budgets removed

Advice to Senior ManagementFire the CEO and bring in someone who can give this company direction again.
