I worked at Brightcove full-time (more than a year)

    Pros

-Relaxed atmosphere, lower/middle-level employees were great to work with
-Beautiful office, great location, lots of internal perks and great parties

    Cons

    -Compensation packages were completely unfair
-No room for growth in sales and marketing
-Management never connected with the "front lines" of Brightcove to really understand what was going on in the market
-Make changes to process, products, and offerings so often that you can never plant your feet and grow
-Lots of favoritism in upper management
-Very top focused and less focused on the impact major changes make on its employees as a whole

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

-Talk to all of your employees before making drastic decisions. The people speaking with prospects and customers will have much more insight into the appropriate direction of the company and will help to make more informed decisions

    Pros

They are pretty stable. The technology they are working with is pretty on key with what you would expect for a technology company.

    Cons

There is a lot of reasons to not work here as an engineer and take your talent somewhere else. Lots of political BS, mass amounts of historical code and debt you will need to maintain. Work environment is not conducive to getting work done in my opinion.

Once a promising and innovative tech company, now just ho-hum.

I worked at Brightcove full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

    - Still the leader in the niche online video platform market
    - Generally smart and nice employees
    - Beautiful, new offices in Boston financial district

    Cons

    - Pay and compensation is intentionally below 50% of market average (except for exec team).
    - Competitors have far superior products.
    - Falling way behind in specific markets (high end media, brand marketing, corporate video).
    - Product development is slow, and innovation is all but absent.
    - Hiring standards have decreased (largely due to lower comp) and many recent hires are "B" or lower.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Choose who you want to be, and focus on that. Why say "we serve X customer" and then spend all your development and sales energy on Y market?

    Politics and Nervousness abound

I have been working at Brightcove

    Pros

If you are hands-on with your tools then this atmosphere is great to be a part of, as there is a lot of collective brain power within the engineering team. The team is always looking for smarter ways to whip up something. The busy bees are nice and easy to get along with.

    Cons

Outside of the engineering team, there has been a lot of turnover within management and favoritism at every vertical. This causes the overall decision making to slow down. Folks that are promoted are generally based on "who knows who". Feedback comes in the form of silence or "sent home packing without any answers". Its a contentious culture and probably why competition is always a step ahead and generally running faster.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Stop making rash decisions and put a thought behind every action. Respect your employees.
