ProsIf anything, the laid back environment.

ConsThis was honestly the worst job I have ever had. The management is terrible and VERY unprofessional. They give no opportunity for growth no matter how hard you work. It's a lot of work for very little pay. All in all this job/company is a joke. Steer clear.

    A nightmare

ECE Lead Teacher (Current Employee) Bronx, NY

ProsTeaching underprivileged children and seeing them learn is always a wonderful experience. Planning is done according to the common core standards and the curriculum is creative.

ConsHorrible corporate management. No teacher support. Students are not evaluated before they are allowed in to the center. Many are emotionally disturbed and abusive. There are many cases of neglect and child abuse. If a child is violent and abusive, and a disruption to your class, the corporate office offers NO support. The child can still continue to come to the class, and the RTI process is lengthy and a JOKE. Not to mention, the parents are in denial about their children needing help. It's bad enough that some of these children have to witness horrible things in their neighborhood and at home, but there is no safe haven here in the classroom. By not giving these disturbed children the help and services they need, they allow other children to witness their violent episodes and put them in danger while allowing their learning to be disrupted. It is sad. They don't care about helping them. They would much rather get the money for these kids even though they so desperately need help! There is no "education" here at Brightside They are contributing to the problem in urban communities, not making it better. As a certified teacher, I am disappointed. I would never send my child to a place like this.

    Jump off the sinking ship

    Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

ProsThe stated mission is admirable. However, the execution of this mission is flawed and failing. They do not succeed on any level.

ConsThis company treats their employees horribly on every level. Staff is underpaid, overworked, required to work long hours and unpaid overtime. The favoritism is clear; supervisors are bullies and abusive to staff. Teachers and academy staff are given no support and then disciplined when they fail due to that lack of support. It is plain that those in power do not care who they hurt.

Advice to Senior ManagementWake up!!!! You are the problem, not your staff. The board of directors should clear out management and start over. The problem is at the top!

    WORST.COMPANY.TO.WORK.FOR

    Ar (Former Employee) Pittsburgh, PA

ProsThere isn't one that I can think of. Oh but wait if you have a child and fall into their awful rules you may or MAY NOT get free childcare

ConsI spent 4 and half years with this company. And it turned out to be a total waste. Not too mention the discrimanation I experienced in this job. Supervisors that treated their employees like garbage. Blatent favoritism. They should be ashamed of themselves in the corporate office. Senior management watched as supervisors treated their employees horribly because THEY did not want to deal with having to hire new staff. That sad part is if management took the time to see that they had great workers and fire the supervisors that were awful that company might have a chance. Not too mention a CEO who did not know a single person's name in there. I have never ever in my life seen anything like it. Backstabbing at it's finest. And to make matters worse when you do a good job you get a lot more work dumped on you on top of being talked about and being disrepected. That place is a total joke.

Advice to Senior ManagementMy advice fire the supervisors who are on a total power trip. Those people are the worst management I have ever seen. Not too mention a bunch of racist women who have it out for people who are trying to do well for themselves. It was made clear on numerous occassions what was going on and they turned the other cheek. That place is huge lawsuit waiting to happen!!

The Company Has Little To No Respect For Their Centers Staff

Lower End Supervisor (Current Employee) Pittsburgh, PA

ProsThey're are NONE...Unless you consider your fellow co-workers are sinking in the same ship you're in!

ConsPoor wages to say a degree is required for most positions. No Real Benefits, No Pension! Childcare teachers are required to have a degree but our thoughts, inputs and suggestions are not taken into consideration. They claim they have the children's best interest is a lie. They don't serve the children a healthy well balance meal, it's all process meals, saturated in fats, sometimes served burnt and cold...For the meals...beware! They don't care how many behavioral children they place in a room, rest assured if the teacher is ratio there is no other help given to her. Teachers have been kicked, hit, spat on by behaviorally challenged children and the children are still allowed to remain in care, if the teacher makes a fuss about the issue, they are reprimanded. Teachers are bounced around from center to center in some cases the centers are on the other side of the city and since we're not given ample pay most teachers depend on public transportation and may not be able to get their...they are then told "Go Home" even though we applied and we're hired at the center that was convenient for us. In addition "Full Time" doesn't mean "Full Time" there are many times you are sent home when the center doesn't have many children. You are penalized if not fired for given your opinion There is nothing I can say positive about this company...nothing at all!

Advice to Senior ManagementIf you're not going to listen to your teachers, because you feel you're above them, then pay attention to the negative blogs and websites such as this and read the negative publicity you're receiving because this your worst PR. In addition look at other large daycare centers, who truly cares about their staff and the children. Look at their incentives, benefits and pension packages...better yet their pay scale. You place your centers in the worst urban areas, without care of safety for your older staff who use public transportation, to walk through those areas either very early in morning or towards evening alone.

If you have no standards, then this is the place for you...

Assistant Teacher (Current Employee) Bronx, NY

ProsWorking with inner-city kids can be difficult, but the reward comes when you see they are actually learning and are eager to do their homework and participate in academic activities. That's just my personal satisfaction, working at Brightside has no PROS!

Cons1. The unfortunate ghetto parents are running the show...no matter how much we try to interact with the parents, the teachers suffer the consequences.
    2. There is no support for teachers! A normal ECE day care would have at least 3 teachers...an after school program would have 1 staff member for 6-10 kids. That is not the case in Brightside, they always have teachers working or breaking one another for lunch.
    3. The neighborhood these cites cater to in the Bronx are the worst. Parents as well as children have an unfortunate lack of respect for themselves and others. You will get hit by, cursed, spit on, or a death threat by a child at some point.
    4. There is a lack of administration at the sites! They only come in for a few visits once a week or so. There is no one to voice your concerns and even if you do, nothing gets done about it. If you are concerned about a child's behavior, it doesn't matter because the parents are running the show and if they don't like what's being to their child, they are still going to bring them in the site.
    5. In-service trainings are completely a waste of time as they do not reflect anything that we can do within our powers. They told us to change our curriculum as well other habits but Brightside is not going to provide us with the materials nor the support!!

Advice to Senior ManagementPlease come to New York and see for yourselves what is going on here. It is absolutely shady business and you should be embarrassed to see how your workers are being exploited. There is no support, no proper/useful training. Curriculums are not being implemented. I would never want to put my child in such an anxiety filled atmosphere. Absolute terror can't wait to find another job.

Horrific for teachers and management run run run!

Academy Director (Former Employee) Philadelphia, PA

ProsHelping families, trying to achieve personal goals while trying to survive corporate hell.

ConsPay, benefits, turn over, loss of hours, transfers, morals, lies, lack of training, unprofessional, broken promises, drama

Advice to Senior ManagementRun while you still can. Extreme high turn over for teachers and management...you never know who is in charge. Teachers get transferred to other centers often, forced to different classrooms even if their degree doesn't reflect the age group and children have no sense of structure being they have a new teacher every month. Pay may be better than some but will not match to your degree. They want your degree for their grants, thats all. Teacher benefits well over 300 a month, pAyroll consistently incorrect, hours are cut regularly without notice, the union has little pull. Directors are given little training, rules change too often allowing for staff confusion. Write up system is horrible. Corporate talks a very good talk and will lure you with money, bonus , benefits and advancement. Run! the ceo is business minded not education minded. They do not walk the talk they gab. Curriculum is a mess and rarely followed through. Corporate does not value any of their employees from teachers to management. They lie to obtain grant money, bonus structure is flawed and taxed. Ratios tend to be over regularly. Their productivity is horrible thus creating center havoc with lack of teachers because enrollment is low often. Too many ghetto staff with drama and no professionalism. The way they solve problems is firing. Too many center facilities are subpar. The company is losing money fast and will continue to do so. Within five years they reconstructed the company with mass firing more than three times. I was not fireside resigned. People work there for paychecks and you start to lose focus on the love of working with children from these monsters. This is for the Philadelphia region mainly but as a whole the company is a mess. Do not work for them.....too much headache and tears. I learned everything not to do. I have worked as management and on the hiring team. I talk to people in regional an corporate. Everyone knows the flaws and are not proud to work there. I call it the circus, because when it's show time, people put on a good show....but your jobs are not safe there and I could say that About the children as well. Don't get suckered.

Brightside academy is one of the worst places to work in

Anonymous Employee (Current Employee) New York, NY

ProsNo pros at all except for the lunch and super which I think is making the kids over weight

ConsO Lord where should I start off, first they hire really ghetto people like seriously, the pay is not good, You have to do so much mop the floors, vacuum, teach the kids, design the classroom, take out the garbage, there’s see through windows so the parents can pop in anytime. It’s just ridiculous. For certified teachers this job is not worth your time and energy. Get another low paying job in another daycare not this and you’re going to be working with ghetto people in a ghetto neighborhood with directors who don’t appreciate your work and don’t understand your only human after a 9 hour shift including lunch with no pay it’s not worth your time and energy. The curriculum here is horrible the children don’t learn anything. PARENTS DON’T BRING YOUR CHILDREN INTO THIS DAYCARE. YOU WONT BE HAPPY.

Advice to Senior ManagementCome to New York observe the center and change your philosophy and curriculum. I really hope the government stops the funding for this organization because it’s not worth it at all and a uniform for certified teachers please.

I can only speak for the center where I worked.........

Assistant Teacher (Former Employee) Bronx, NY

Proswhile working there you are able to help children that come from underprivileged communities. Also, the teachers and assistants are very friendly. The parents and teachers appreciate your hard work and diligence.

ConsWhere should I start..........The pay is horrible. The work is grueling. While there I was a teacher, janitor, cook, security guard and so much more. After all the hard work you put in your efforts will never be acknowledged by management. Speaking of management, very rude no respect for employees.

Advice to Senior ManagementOffer confidential surveys for employees about the directors. Allow employs to mail them in. Some individuals want to voice concern but don't wan to lose their jobs.
