    Flexible, laid-back place to work.

    Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)
    Cambridge, MA

ProsIt is a very laid back atmosphere, but at the same time people that want to get ahead and learn have opportunities to do so. The job is much more flexible in comparison to some other jobs in biotech, and management is very understanding. They are very good about letting people do what they are most interested in, within reason. They do have trainings though where employees can learn new statistical programs and such, which is good.

ConsSome days can be a little slow and the work often tends to be repetitive. You might be able to learn more working in a more academic setting, but it depends on what you are looking for exactly. There are some opportunities for advancement, but you can also end up working as a technician for several years doing the same thing over and over again. Some of the employees that I have encountered are not extremely motivated and don't work a lot. On the other hand, some other people are brilliant and work extremely hard, so it can be a mix. Finally, since the Institute is still growing substantially, organization is not the greatest at this moment. It can be frustrating to navigate the surroundings since they change often.

Advice to Senior ManagementImprove organization, screen potential employees more carefully.

Top notch science if genomics is your thing

    Computational Biologist (Current Employee)
    Cambridge, MA

ProsThe people here are the best at what they do, and you get to learn from them every day. The work environment is socially relaxed and informal, if scientifically intense. Opportunities to make professional contacts in the Boston area are excellent, and the institute hosts many interesting seminars.

ConsThere could be more collaboration and communication between groups, especially if they see one another as competitors. This gets in the way of science.

Advice to Senior ManagementEncourage groups to work together more.

    Great culture.

    Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)

ProsStrong culture of collaboration. Good benefits. Amazing building and really great atmosphere to go to work to every morning. The proximity to MIT and the connections to other major hospitals bring in an air of privilege and importance of the work -- helps with motivation on a bad day.

ConsSomewhat weak administration. Recent high-level turnover and a series of questionable financial decisions. Funding is largely based on private philanthropy and federal grants, so jobs seem to come and go with the general economic climate.
