I worked at Broadcom full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

The associates (most) are great people to work with.

    Cons

It is a place that is managed through intimidation. Managers try and pit employees against each other. There is no doing “what’s right or best for the company”, more a power struggle between departments. There is a layer of management (Directors) that have been in power for too long. The swear and degrade employees to the point of tears. At Broadcom it’s all about lining the pockets of the executives, nothing else matters.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

When you try and hire the best and brightest, keep them away from your old school managment team and let these new employees do what they were hired to do.

    Pros

    Great people to work with!

    Cons

No vision, leadership and accountability at the executive level!

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Vision and leadership is the key to success!
Outsourcing is the game for losers; the executive shall take a lesson from Apple's success!
Regulate excessive executive compensation; even at their level the compensation shall be performance based!
Deal with workplace favoritism; start from the executive level!

I have been working at Broadcom full-time (more than a year)

    Pros

Company invests in all new tools. The also make competitive compensation. When they interview, it appears that they want the best candidate with newer skills.

    Cons

Senior Management is not technically savvy and has no vision. They like buzzwords and talk big, however do not emphasize use of latest technologies. Overall in the IT side people with low intelligence are promoted as they manage to make a group with people who are there for 8 years or more. The company is shrinking due to poor decisions on upper management.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Get more fresh people into the organization. A little churn is a good thing. Encourage working smart. Do not promote oldtimers just because they have stayed long enough. They might be staying because they cannot find anything else.

    I worked at Broadcom full-time

    Pros

Engineers are generally nice, and capable

    Cons

Management has no vision, no accountability with the miserable failing of wireless baseband business, misstep after misstep, project killed one after another, no work and life balance, some teams were felt run by Indian mafias, back stabbing is new normal.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Be honest on what was going on with wireless baseband business, hold the responsible persons accountable.

I worked at Broadcom full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Inflated employee titles. Easy and superficial promotion process. Seemingly successful business and operation in hot product areas. Low barrier in getting hired.

    Cons

Years have passed by since the time I decided to leave this employer. I told myself those 4 years when I worked with Broadcom were the darkest years in my career. Now looking back, What I told myself turned even more true.

I have been working at Broadcom full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Challenging work, but not enough time and resource, always very busy. Good team members but many bad managers.

    Cons

Work late and see manager go home on time. NO promotion after 4 year. People get lay off end of last year and more work now.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Manager should understand and be able to do what all team members do, so they can understand and appreciate the work and how long it takes.

    Pros

There are no pros for this company.

    Cons

Their culture is to foster mistrust, unclear communication, and micromanagement. Long hours and unrealistic expectations. When the entry level employees know more than the managers you know there's something wrong.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Cut middle management and restructure the organization.

    Pros

    70 hour work weeks.
Raises are rare after your 2nd year.
Allow Discrimination toward non Asian or non Indian woman engineer's.

    Cons

First 2 years treated well. Thereafter, only a selected few are treated well.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

If you force us to work 70 hour weeks, than how about granting a reward or even a deceit raise.

I have been working at Broadcom full-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

A lot of good technical people.

    Cons

Good only if you're a old timer, especially your boss is your old pal. Performance review is a joke. If your boss is a newly promoted manager... no leverage. Stock and cash bonus were decided way up the chain. Job titles are jokes, too. So easy to be an Associate Technical Director..... for integrating a run-of-the mill IP ? Only way up is kiss ass.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Wake up and fix the culture. Otherwise, Qualcomm and MediaTek will kill BRCM really soon.
