    Pros

Manager in Training Program; Competitive Salary; Great Benefits in the form of Dental, Medical, Vision, PTO Accrual; Over 1,000 communities nationwide so there's opportunity to transfer

    Cons

Hours can vary on the negative end; Depending on the position, there can be a lack of training; A little controlling when it comes to the chain of command.

    Advice to Management

In my experience, there seems to be a disconnect between management staff and our direct care staff so focusing on keeping a strong bond is essential to the success of the community.

    Pros

Everyone from dishwashers all the way to CEO care about the residents we serve. There is a culture of caring that runs through everything we do. I find a lot of value that

    Cons

Benefits could improve. A company this size should be able to better negotiate healthcare benefits. Don't group PTO with sick time (or give more PTO)

    Pros

The residents are great. Location is an easy commute. Most employees are great people. Lot of immigrant workers who need entry level jobs to start a new life here.

    Cons

Kitchen facilities need a complete overhaul. Equipment is rarely fixed in a timely manner. Don't know how we pass health inspections. Always running out of supplies to cook.

    Advice to Management

Get rid of the executive chef and dining services director and get some competent people in their jobs.

    Pros

I love the retention bonus, they pay well and they offer a 401K. They have a lot of facilities so you can transfer just about anywhere you want provided there is an opening.

    Cons

The retention bonus disappears after 7 years. You have to beg and get on your hands and knees for equipment. They keep hiring therapists and yet... gee, what are we suppose to sit on? I sit on a 4WW. Stools are $150 a piece for adjustable ones and that's too much money. You can't take vacation the same time another person in your discipline does but different supervisors from different buildings can take vacations at the same time when in actuality, 1 could have stayed to do the schedules so now you gotta make a therapist do the schedules (for no extra $, mind you) for different buildings and s/he has to still see THEIR patients. We can no longer give 7 day notices to d/c until we have done a home eval which means you have to wait on social services to figure out where a patient is going. No need to get into their job description but suffice it to say, they take their good old time doing that and the therapist keeps the patient on therapy for monetary reasons and the reasoning is no longer justifiable which means nobody gives a sh(t whether a therapist loses their license or not.

    Advice to Management

I don't really get this column. Management is like any other management... they could care less about the patient and more about making money. They don't care how therapists do it, they just want it done. Oh and that mantra about I am Brookdale smacks of propaganda.

Probably the best place I could have worked at as a STNA

I have been working at Brookdale Senior Living part-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

At least at my facility, the ratio of STNAs to residents was very good. If no one called off and we were fully staffed, there were only a maximum of 10 residents to take care of, often less if we aren't full census. The facility was well stocked. The residents paid more at this facility than the average nursing home though. They definitely got better care. Every resident has their own room with a bathroom and a shower room of their own. They do not have to share with any other residents.

    Cons

The pay is low for part time and full time employees at 11 dollars an hour. However, PRN STNAs get 16 dollars an hour.

    Pros

Great community with wonderful employees until Brookdale came around.

    Cons

Increased prices, not family oriented anymore. Worried about the dollars and not the community. Too big too fast. Welcome to corporate world!

    Advice to Management

    bigger isn't always better. B
