I have been working at Brookdale Senior Living full-time for more than a year

    Pros

I love the people I work with. We all work well together. We do disagree with each other from time to time but we agree to disagree and move on to the next thing.

    Cons

Some of the negatives are low pay and poor health benefits.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Continue to work with your staff to keep them involved and motivated. At times, there is a disconnect in communication to everyone who works for the same community.

I have been working at Brookdale Senior Living full-time

    Pros

They offer amazing quality of food, quality of life, you can tell they really care for the residents. They spend the money on the residents and activities for them. The only ALF or nursing home I've seen where the employees eat the food, all others I've seen the food is so horrible, processed crap that no one dares try it. Private rooms with carpet and furniture from home makes each room feel like the resident's home. If you have CNA training or emt or similar, they pay you more.

    Cons

Working with end stage dementia patients, without hoyer lifts, meaning you have to find a way to lift them without machines.

    Pros

Loved the residents and their families. They are what keeps most Associate coming back day after day. Great team when they work together and not against each other.

    Cons

No respect for the Associates or work/life balance. Unrealistic demands that can't be met even working 60+hrs/week including nights and weekends which is expected. Demeaning and demoralizing upper management. Focus purely on revenue, often at employee and resident expense.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Apply the Cornerstones and Mission statement to your Associates too! They're hardworking, good hearted people you're taking advantage of, churning and burning for the sake of making $$

I have been working at Brookdale Senior Living full-time for more than a year

    Pros

I like the residents, my co-workers and the managers of my location

    Cons

Cost cutting makes it hard to survive and dangerous to residents : cutting a $9:00 an hour associate 3 hours per week to save money, that money would pay for 3 dinners for my family, I hate to leave after a year here but I am now looking to move on. I will miss everyone here but I need to survive.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Why would you cut a half hour a day for your most important employees, I am sure that the people that are making the decision do not think that $25 a week is a big deal but it is to us, it makes us feel unimportant and disposable to just cut our hours. I feel bad for my managers, they are the ones that have to try to justify the cuts to employees and try to explain the turnover to customers

I have been working at Brookdale Senior Living full-time for more than 8 years

    Pros

Co-workers are all really nice compared to other places I've worked. There's a popcorn machine in the break room. I believe the community staffs are dedicated, caring professionals.

    Cons

Chronic under staffing causes lots of job dissatisfaction and forces poor customer service to the communities. Expect to work long, long hours to meet minimum requirements. No clear paths for advancement. Positions tend to be filled from outside or acquisitions rather than inside which makes advancement challenging. Lots of under-qualifed senior managers who've been around forever. Pay is average and benefits absolutely stink. Management talks the talk but doesn't walk the walk where values and culture are concerned. Training is nearly non-existent.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Make performance management meaningful. Separate the wheat from the chaff. Provide training to employees and managers to develop them. Think more strategically, where "long term" extends beyond the next earnings report. Expand the IO office beyond M&A. Business initiatives are not coordinated or prioritized at all. The culture is one of complete distrust. Departments don't trust one another and employees don't trust management.

I have been working at Brookdale Senior Living full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

Salary, friends along the way, learning experience. Several locations to transfer to if needed within the area. Offer medical, dental and vision. 401k matching , group legal and others.

    Cons

Bipolar management , have to be in good with people to survive. Too big too fast , no consistency among procedures from community to community. How do people get away with not following procedures so much? Max raise is %2 per year.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Really listen and talk to people on the bottom of the totem pole. It's not as peachy as you like to think it is.

I have been working at Brookdale Senior Living full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

I love everything about my job, especially the residents. The management team here is really good, especially the nursing director and the resident care coordinator. The Executive Director even brought in a bank to discuss with us about the benefits of direct depositing our check. They really care about us as employees.

    Cons

I would not change a thing. This is a great place to work.

    Pros

People (associates, residents, leadership, peers), benefits, associates take pride in what they do! Opportunities for growth & advancement! Making a difference in the lives of the residents we serve!

    Cons

None and if I did I wouldn't share it here. I would discuss with my RVP!

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Keep doing what you do every day! As the CEO says, "If you're not serving a resident, serve someone who is!"

I have been working at Brookdale Senior Living full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

The community I work at is like a family where both residents and associates feel comfortable to be there.

    Cons

The only challenge I have faced was a work-life balance because of going to school and working full time.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Compensation could be more competitive for associates demonstrating above and beyond service.
