    Pros

Beautiful location at a small research institute, with some very talented scientists.

    Cons

Administration is disconnected from the scientists and poor management of funds during difficult fiscal times. Limited practical access to larger scientific community.

    Pros

Great scientists, great science, great location. Easy commute and parking. Depending on which PI you work for the hours can be flexible.

    Cons

Disconnect between upper management and the scientists. There is no sense of community or loyalty. The culture of the Buck has changed over time. There has been a lot of changes in HR so it is hard to say if there is an issue who to go to.

    Advice to Management

Value the scientists since we make up the majority of the Buck Institute and the science we do is what people support.

    Pros

The buildings are architecturally beautiful, set up on a hill with an amazing view of the bay. Parking is easy and the commute from Marin or SF is easy. The work being done in the labs is interesting.

    Cons

There is no understanding from the management about the resources it has a responsibility to maintain, in both people and assets. Large layoffs with no plans for operational continuity have left many still there with poor morale and a defeatist perspective. The old Russian axiom 'they pretend to pay you and you pretend to work' appears to be how the staff operates.

    Advice to Management

There is no future in pessimism. The staff responsible for key infrastructure has been replaced so many times, either through budgetary cuts or mass exodus has left the remaining, largely new staff, unclear or doubtful of the future of the business. The Buck has some very big problems that need addressing ASAP.

    Pros

Good commute for people living in the North Bay

    Cons

No pay increases in 5 + years, although the majority of support staff has been laid off and now the remaining group is expected to do the jobs of 4-5 other personnel. Benefits are lacking to non-existent.

    Advice to Management

Get rid of the top three people in positions of power and replace it with a whole new group. Try thanking the people who are now forced to do the jobs of many once in awhile. There is zero moral or loyalty among the employees, try to improve that. Do something before this entire place implodes, the reputation of the institute within the scientific community is already ruined.

    Pros

Great people, great science, different cultures, flexible hours, science related and interpersonal activities. A great place to grow in professional way as in a personal way.

    Cons

The Institute in located far away from the big city, San Francisco, which limits your social life. The institute lacks dorms. You need to find your own living arrangement even if coming for short periods of time.
