    Pros

If you are competent at what you do and show initiative you will be given all of the responsibility you can manage. Complacency is not rewarded, but if you continually grow you will likely be rewarded. Communication not only within your department but across the entire company is key to your success. Hiring from within happens a lot and is encouraged by management.

    Cons

Hiring from within potentially occurs a little more than it should. I feel the company needs to hire more from outside the company and outside the Butte County area. They need to ensure that they are bringing in fresh perspectives and industry experience. There is a tendency for management to act based on perceptions instead of facts. This is not uncommon in business. Just be aware of it and ensure that the perceptions match the facts as much as possible. Remember that other's perceptions are their reality.

    Advice to Management

Live the values that you set for everyone in the company. Don't get to wrapped up in perceptions. Talk to people. A LOT of people before forming strong opinions. Be open to the possibility of letting your perceptions be shattered by facts.

    Pros

I came on six months ago and have already been promoted from Data Specialist to a management position. This company is growing so fast, there are tons of opportunities for the go-getter or the employee with management experience! This company is so SUPPORTIVE of the creative process! I see something to fix, have an idea to fix it, the gates are open for me to run with it. If I succeed, we all win; if I fail, I'm not punished (as long as I fail honestly and admit it before too much damage is done). Work can be boring. Build.com makes it as palatable as possible with: free organic fruits delivered weekly, a keg of Sierra Nevada every Friday, fully stocked kitchens, adjustable-height desks (so I can stand up and move around while I work), ping pong, darts, PS2, competitions, FREE CLASSES, free fresh-ground coffee, and frequent events.

    Cons

    Well, it is still WORK.

    Advice to Management

Avoid snap judgments. Ensure it's not just the person with the biggest personality that gets ahead. Some of the quieter ideas might be the smarter ones. Don't rely solely on middle management to communicate the ideas upward (esp. in the clamorous sales dept). Keep promoting other, more direct channels of communication. Keep up the great work!

    Pros

Great colleagues, compensation (for Chico), and some perks such as free fruit and coffee.

    Cons

Management is disorganized depending on what department you're in. Lots of nepotism and favoritism, as well as cliques in the management / executive circles. If you're not buddies with people high up it's very hard to move up.

    Advice to Management

Stop the petty politics and do more to be transparent on the inner workings and plans for Build.com. It's frustrating to see when the company is doing well and it doesn't translate to the lower employees in terms of some monetary bonus or perk.

    Cons

Communication can be lacking. Communication could use help in many areas. Especially better communication prior to making changes.

    Pros

This was my first job after I graduated from Chico State. I was hired as an Inside Sales Rep. Great company. I felt like the culture there was very positive. The motto was "Take care of the customer" and "Principles not policies." They had very clear and attainable sales goals with a commission schedule that created a clear incentive to reward hard work. They really focused on creating a culture of honesty and fairness. They were a rapidly growing internet retail company and they firmly believed in Zappos-like "WOW experience" customer service. I felt like it was a great company to work with. Good sales managers. They almost always chose to err on the side of the customer and believed firmly in creating a pleasant and truthful shopping experience. Good coworkers too.

    Cons

I think pay was a little low, but I did get several raises in the 1.5 years I worked there. They were making a LOT of money and seemed to always be hiring and expanding. I do feel that the CEO and Executive Team was sort of an elite circle and I got the impression that they were all making six figures while the rest of us were making something in the low to mid 20's. But still, I was thankful for the job, and I could see that there was genuine opportunity for promotion and learning new skills.

    Advice to Management

Thank you for giving me the opportunity to work and earn an income in the midst of a horrible economic depression. I'm thankful. I do wish the pay was a little higher, and there is a correlation between compensation and employee retention. But overall it was a good experience and a great company to work for.

    Pros

Build has a great atmosphere and most of the employees contribute to making a better product; customer experience. I was fortunate that I worked in a wonderful team, where everyone helped each other improve professionally.

    Cons

It's corporate in the sense that the founder sold the company and the bottom line is just that. Raises weren't offered because of under-performance of sales, which isn't necessarily the fault of the staff. And, if you want to get ahead, buy into the culture. All that said, because of the limited options in the ratings, I do approve of the CEO and would recommend it as a possible employer. If nothing else, you'll gain some good experience.

    Advice to Management

If you have good people, compensate them adequately.

    Pros

If you want the experience or environment of working in a Bay Area-style tech company, one without the risk of failure you get with startup companies, Build.com is a perfect fit. Signs such as "Work Hard Play Hard", "No Good Comes From Hitting 'Reply-All'" and "If It's Really Funny, It's Probably Harassment" adorn the walls. The dress and the atmosphere are casual, the culture is young and dynamic, and the default expectation is growth.

    Cons

Compensation is not what it would be in a larger city, though cost of living for Chico is commensurately lower as well. Rapid change can sometimes outpace the ability of the company to keep up with it. The first couple times the CEO walks by swearing and threatening to fire people can be unnerving.

    Advice to Management

Look before you leap. Make sure all the ramifications of the new, shiny thing you're about to sign on to has been fully considered.

    Pros

The pay is good for the area, the company culture is fantastic, and the people are great to work with for the most part.

    Cons

Training is kind of scattered, and the supervisory staff sometimes struggles to keep morale up when things are not going as well as they often do.

    Advice to Management

Find a way to introduce consistency to the maturing company culture.
