I have been working at Burlington Northern Santa Fe full-time for more than 8 years

    Pros

Nice wages and benifits and sometimes nice vehicles and equipment.

    Cons

    MOW department:
Lack of manpower- they'll work you 130 hours a week-ask for help-get none
Safety- really- 100+ a week. work 48 days without a day off.
On call 24/7- deny a call and see what happens. They want you to take calls on what is supposed to be your
day off because they won't hire personnel
Call departments (like payroll) for how to pay-then they come back and start taking thousands of dollars back/ tell you you should file this form and you do, then they deny that
they don't honor the contracts they sign
Eployee Assistance Program- hit a child and asked for counseling- got told to drink water, sleep and talk about it.
They buy cheap equipment in some area's and it makes a safety hazzard
Not enough time to work properly and do a quality job
Employee's should have good moral and attitude but most are poor and bad-company made

Someone should take a serious long look at the monies wasted and the everyday battle the workforce faces.
The lies from management needs to stop. Run this company like the great company it can be.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

I have been working at Burlington Northern Santa Fe

    Pros

Easy work and good pay if you live in a small town like me. you can go to work take a train to the away from home terminal and back and sometimes not even see a boss.

    Cons

no family life. You think that you can manage but after a while you just cant keep up. you give up all the things you love one by one. you have no schedule and can't make plans because you are on call 24 7. and if you can live with that you should be ok.... until they lay you off without warning. I have been laid off and had to travel to keep a job with them. I have worked out of 16 different depots in the last 7 years and still don't know for sure where I will be a week from know.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

start to care about people. not just stockholders but the employees and their family as well. there is plenty of room to treat us well and still make profits hand over fist. The lack of a good lineup or schedule has cost me everything I love to do with my family, church, school, and recreation ant those things are the primary reason to have a good job.

The company treats me as if I were a slave and has no concideration for familys or quality of life off the job.

I have been working at Burlington Northern Santa Fe

    Pros

Excellent pay and benefits. One of the last really good union jobs. One of the few American jobs left that cant be shipped over seas.

    Cons

Terrible hours. The only company I have ever seen that works harder to fire an employee than to hire one.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Stop hiring college grads and promote experienced railroaders. A BS in communications does not qualifiy you to operate a railroad.
