Former Employee – worked at CA Technologies full-time for more than 10 years

ProsYou get paid twice a month
You may get to work from home
Relocation is paid if you are important enough
After 3 years 17 vacation days a year
After 10 years 22 vacation days a year

ConsNo upward mobility / career path progression
Management views employees as interchangeable cogs
Layoffs, a regular feature of the annual report
Jobs being off-shored
Management by fear (see last 3 above)
Flavor of the month / jump on the latest bandwagon style of management
Employees seeking to better themselves through education are not supported

Advice to Senior ManagementAccept the fact that CA is a mainframe software company and stop trying to make it something it is not. Putting the mainframe products on life support is a sure way to drive customers to the competition when features they need are not there, and quality issues make them unworkable despite the fact that ease of use CA's green screen products is often better than the competition's.

ProsWork from home oppurtunities if your manager is flexible

ConsHigher level management doesnt have a plan of what they are doing.

Takes NASTY Decisions.

Advice to Senior ManagementThink when you are doing a reorg or expanding a business or putting in somewrk force in some location. When you are not interested in some location dont ever employ and shutdown all of a sudden.

Current Employee – been working at CA Technologies full-time for more than 7 years

ProsCA Stands by their shareholders.
Turnover of CEO's In six years, 4 CEOs. THey all follow the same game plan.

ConsUnethical.
No customer loyalty (milk the base).
Finance in questionable.
New processes that last 3 quarters and are dropped.
Product are QA'd at 50% (customers pays for the rest).
CA Support is a shame (very junior ready contents of the bookshelf back to customers) The goos ones have been laid off.
Strong Click in management that CEO cannot break. Management will break him first.
HIde the facts from the customers. Through out poorly written SOWs and blame other for the errors.

Advice to Senior ManagementThey will not listen so why bother.

Former Employee – worked at CA Technologies

ProsThe new CEO is making lots of changes, some of which could ultimately bring about improvements.

Cons1200 staff (approximately 9% of the total workforce) has just been laid off. In many cases, employees were selected according to their location, rather than their skills, apparently in honour of a new philosophy that everyone assigned to a particular development team now needs to be located in the same office. The lay offs were announced to staff and investors on 7 May and many (or perhaps all) were executed the following day, with no time for any assessment of whether staff could be reassigned to a different team or relocated to another office. Some products have lost all of their key support staff and many affected staff have scarce mainframe skills that the company will likely struggle to find in the future.

Advice to Senior ManagementPray that you are not in the next round of layoffs.

ProsSales is paid very well; Good benefits for all,

ConsThere are a few old timers that rule. New talent is encouraged with false promises and big salaries. Talent leaves as soon as they figure out that all their time will be spent on internal reporting of metrics that are meaningless. Women are systematically marginalized and pushed out. Overheard an executive saying CA needs to hire more women just to put a facade on the problem. Despite the revolving door for women ts easier than actually fixing a culture that rejects and cannot work with them.

Advice to Senior ManagementBuild trust and leadership from the top. Find and get rid of the old timer thugs. Leadership is different than management -- reward leadership and results over reporting of activity. I hope the CEO is quick and skilled at turning this ship around.

Former Employee – worked at CA Technologies full-time for more than 3 years

ProsGood Pay
Excellent Benefits
Excellent Work Schedule

ConsRelationships more important than performance. There is quite a bit of politics involved to the detriment of the overall performance of the company. If you are a new employee coming into the company and not an executive then poor equity options exist. Titles in the bay area do not match up to market compensation. Not enough flexibility in titles.

Advice to Senior ManagementListen to HR before you lose valuable talent.
Act on your core values.

Former Employee – worked at CA Technologies for more than 3 years

ProsSome really smart good people can be found throughout the org. In 2007-2009 internal process went through a massive overhaul (tks Mike Christenson) and is now running efficiently in terms of quota setting, deal process, customer support process, etc... Plus, there are enough tenured employee's who know how to get things done, as well as know how things were done in the past, to be able to correct any conflicts.

ConsWhere are they headed? Leadership is desperately searching for the next step. Company positioning to be sold??? Company to move in a innovative way into big data or data integration??? No one seems to know. Also, lots of "me-to" technology. Much of which works well, but, expensive for clients to swap in and out of so why do it versus staying with competitive offering and merely negotiating price.

Advice to Senior ManagementMake a statement. Stop hiding behind the massive install base and leverage it do something really creative. Give up short term gains in a gambit to shift the market with a non-Oracle like approach for a change.

Former Employee – worked at CA Technologies full-time for less than a year

ProsGood compensation and working from home is a plus. Some good people but pretty far down the totem pole to amke a difference.

ConsWhat you read in Wikipedia is true but the company is still run by a small group of investors trying to keep the lid on until they can sell their stock for a good price. In other words, they don't give a hoot for their employees and their long-term strategy is simply non-existent. Recent acquisitions make no sense from an architectural or market perspective. Once bought, the new products soon fall into decline per analysts reports. Really a black hole for good people and good products.

Advice to Senior ManagementFire yourselves and sell your stock.

Pros-Quickly accumulate vacations
-there is currently plenty of free parking
-

Cons-not everyone treated equally.
-many individuals not qualified to work there especially at the management level
-don't give the tools to get the job done

Advice to Senior Managementi know some of the middle management is no longer working there but when the police come to investigate management you should really look into it.
