    Pros

    Many awesome co-workers
    Competitive benefits
When things work right, you have the power of a billion dollar organization behind you

    Cons

    Annual spring cleaning
The only thing constant at CA is the churn in leadership.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Recognize the value that your employees provide to your bottom line, rather than looking at them as operating costs on a balance sheet.

A very large company with lots of politics
Care more about the product than the people
    Scapegoats are found regularly

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Pay more attention to your people

Big New York tech company trying to transform into a start-up

    Former Employee - Anonymous Employee

    I worked at CA Technologies

    Pros

CA has been genuinely trying to transform itself over the past few years everything from culture to benefits. It's even trying to move from New York to California. Although it's unlikely that CA would completely abandon Islandia -- as a lot of execs work from the Manhattan office -- the hot products and firing is in the Bay Area.

Culture -- beer cart Fridays, monthly get togethers after hours in the cafeteria, ping-pong tournaments in the main lobby

Benefits -- unlimited vacation ;-), paternity leave

    Cons

It's strength is in mainframe, as is the majority of revenue. Much like companies larger than itself e.g. Microsoft, Oracle, SAP, etc. CA buys companies. However, unlike many of those larger companies, it cannot organically grow a product -- really, name one.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Remove the excessive number of processes; processes are supposed to augment functionality and not hinder it.

    Pros

Technology is good, people I worked with were great

    Cons

Silos- Slow to adapt to SaaS market, trying to move on premise solutions to cloud is proving difficult.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Partner strategy is another round of mea culpas with a new group of management. Partners need consistency not apologies.

    Pros

    Flexibility to work from home

    Cons

Managers may not be qualified in their position

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Properly vet candidate for promotion, evaluating their interaction within a team. Many candidates just manage up which means that their team is not primary in their mind.

    Pros

Bring in some great new products helping companies develop and deploy applications faster at higher quality. Also focusing on managing and securing APIs.

    Cons

Constant change and a lot of turnover, many people have left in the near future. Some of this is good but some really good people have left.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Create a way to identify and retain top talent.

Some good products and perks but political

    Former Employee - Sales Director
    Former Employee - Sales Director

I worked at CA Technologies full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Compensation is competitive at least from a salary perspective, particularly if you're on the sales side. Good bonus structure, excellent opportunities to win additional perks like trips or cash based on performance. Generally friendly and well-meaning people, and not really a cut-throat culture. Good opportunities for leadership training/skills development.

    Cons

Political maneuvering is critical to success here. Leadership surrounded themselves with "yes-men" and were extremely concerned with managing up, and not having tough conversations, just staying alive. For a software company there are an awful lot of people here that have been with the company for 20+ years, making great money and completely comfortable with the status quo.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Go hire more people from start-ups and empower them to enact change. Buy world-class companies and figure out how to keep and promote their employees to enact change.

Former Employee - Customer Success Manager in Plano, TX

I worked at CA Technologies full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

    Decent pay and benefits
Mostly remote office work (home office or client site)
Ability to create relationships with customer supported

    Cons

Most managers do not have basic managerial skills and are promoted solely based on longevity with the company
Solely focused on selling new products and not supporting installed products
Re-orgs occur annually (joke was that CA stood for "change annually" or "change always")
Customer is viewed as only a revenue stream (once product is sold, nobody seems to care if it works)

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

The best way to create a customer for life is to understand their business environment and work to ensure that the products are meeting the customer's need.
Value your customer-facing employees for the relationships.

    Pros

    Good compensation
Lots of opportunity to move into different roles
    Great benefits

    Cons

    High turnover
    Inexperienced management
Product direction and vision changes every year
Reorganization happen every year. I've had six bosses in under two years

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Do a better job of hiring experienced sales people. Way too many C players not enough B and A players.
