Many a small thing has been made large by the right kind of advertising. - Mark Twain

    Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)

ProsGreat place for building long term personal and professional relationships.

ConsPoor management. Too many layoffs. No market strategy. Lack of new product development. Forecast unrealistic likely due to no market research/analysis. There are always career opportunities available because there are always layoffs.

Advice to Senior ManagementCompetitive and market research. New product development with fresh ideas and Future (not past) technology. Replace management in several departments. Give employees a feeling of security by keeping some around for more than a year or two. Better compensation.

    very bad attitude between coworkers

    Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)

ProsMany interesting projects, great place for new grads. Overtime is paid, flexible time schedules, possibilities to go on business trips.

ConsEmployees talk constantly against each other, management encourages this by hailing heroes, who are mostly patchers of code. Very little structure about how the work should proceed. Business trips may become a curse for some workers, who may ended up spending more than 50% of their time abroad.

Advice to Senior ManagementStart thinking about improving the work atmosphere. There should be ways to organize projects so that their progress can be monitored. It would be important to have a structured series of tests to validate all interfaces. Stop thinking that juniors can do everything and that past experience accounts for nothing.

    frequent re-organizations

Systems Software (Former Employee) Montreal, QC (Canada)

    ProsInteresting product, use high technology

ConsIt is not important how well you work, it is important how loud you speak; frequent re-organizations
The GL did not have idea on what are employee current tasks.

    Stressful environment.

Aircraft Systems Engineer (Former Employee) Montreal, QC (Canada)

ProsDecent salary, paid overtime, opportunity to see the world during the field trips.
The only way to increase salary is to travel to the client sites, because you have to work a lot of extra hours.

ConsVery frequent restructuring/reorganizations. People are terrified of being fired. No promotion opportunities or you have to work for ages in the low level. The management understands business but doesn't understand the technology and the processes. The things are upgraded only when some 3rd part contractors stop producing some components. There is no or really poor system of knowledge preservation. There is no education provided for the in-house software except 2-weeks standard super boring ridiculous course. There are no working procedures. Tons of time are wasted due to the wrong sequence of work or miscommunication between the groups. Micromanagement, almost all the tasks are scheduled "for yesterday".
The only reason this company survives is because there are no competitors of the same size, but they are coming...

    Unrealistic expectations

Modeling & Simulation Consultant (Former Employee) East Brisbane (Australia)

ProsLarge well-known name and good salary

ConsUnrealistic expectation of targets and short term views

Advice to Senior ManagementAdapt your target as the industry swings up or down. Keep good people for when times get better.

CAE is in the process of a crash landing

Project Manager (Current Employee) Montreal, QC (Canada)

ProsFriendly coworkers, on-site cafeteria, flexible hours (for non-unionized employees), health club subsidies.

ConsNo training, heavy in processes and red tape, internal competition between divisions hilighted by a terrible management bonus plan that paid out almost nothing the second year it was forced onto employees.

    A downward spiral since 2008

Software Systems Specialist (Current Employee) Saint-Laurent, QC (Canada)

Pros- An amazing product to play with for a young engineer.
    - Various travel opportunities depending on your system or group.

Cons- The corporate management that has been in place since 2008 has hurt the quality of the product to an level unimaginable by anyone who worked at CAE before that period. When will the customer realize that something has changed for the worst?...
    - A huge number of experienced employees (10-15-20 years) have left to be replace by young graduates. The total number of years of experience gone must be amazing.
    - Simulator work schedules are 24hrs. it is not unusual to work on the evening or at night. Even for 20+ years experienced engineer.

Advice to Senior ManagementYour many reorganizations of Engineering might have hurt the culture and know-how of this company beyond repair. The saddest part of it all: the lost of pride which was so present and distinct before 2007.

Not exactly a stimulating place to work in....

Software Developer (Current Employee) Montreal, QC (Canada)

ProsGood pay, reasonably interesting for someone who has never worked in a simulation environment before (though it gets stale very quickly). Wide variety of projects/customers to work on. Possibility to travel worldwide and make some decent money.

ConsMonotonous tasks, very few pro-active and motivated people to work with. Work schedule which changes on a week-to-week (or day-to-day) basis depending on project situation. Lots of evening and night shifts. Personal time becomes a precious commodity.

Advice to Senior ManagementSometimes, it is worth a bit of short-term pain to achieve long-term gain. Need to develop a culture where people take pride in their work, and this will only happen if they are recognized and rewarded in a timely manner.

Really not the best place to work!

    Engineering (Former Employee)

    ProsInteresting product
    Many good people

ConsSalaries start out low and stay that way compared to the rest of the industry
Not much structure in the product development
Bottom line is the only focus
Short term vision quarter to quarter all driven by the markets
    Major re-organizations occurring too frequently
    Instability

Advice to Senior ManagementTreat your employees with more respect and as valuable assets. The compensation gap between the regular worker and the upper management is way out of line.
