I worked at CAL POLY as an intern (Less than a year)

    Pros

Very friendly and helpful staff members. The science building is wonderful and the surrounding area is beautiful. The keycard system for using the laboratory works well and ensures a safe environment.

    Cons

outdated equipment and underfunded labs/ projects in science make progress slow and often tedious. There is often competition for using equipment Many labs are overused while others a rarely used.

    Advice to Management

Try and allocate resources in more effective ways and ensure that researchers and technicians are not wasting materials. Place a greater emphasis on student research.

I have been working at CAL POLY (Less than a year)

    Pros

I have been at this position for nearly seven years. I have a very flexible schedule, and work with intelligent, mature colleagues. My supervisor is supportive, and has worked hard to keep my position funded. Great location.

    Cons

Full time positions in my area are rare. Because I am part time I don't have benefits which is a problem. Other than that, the working conditions are good.

    Pros

-Small community of staff members; you really get to know every person/ or know of them on campus -Great public university -The university is representative of "doing" and applying what is taught in the classrooms.

    Cons

-More need for professional development opportunities -Underpaid for the amount of work staff members do. -Depending on the department, there is little to no advancement is position/title

    Advice to Management

I would say to really look at why people become so discontent here. It is a lovely place with very nice people, but there is a culture of feeling undervalued.

I worked at CAL POLY part-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Extremely friendly, very flexible, and will have you work more or less depending on what YOU want

    Cons

A few other employees didn't understand the meaning of washing their hands upon clocking in, and in between certain tasks such as cleaning and then handling food.

    Advice to Management

Keep doing what you're doing! I would suggest enforcing campus-wide food handlers' cards though.

    Pros

Great community of students. Many resources to utilize to facilitate activities. Good co-advisors.
