I have been working at CEB full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

I came here for career development, and that's what I got. Like all things in life, you only get out of it what you put in, but there's a lot to get from a career at CEB. I began in the product track. (Not the sales side.)

    Cons

A bit under market pay for consulting, but it's fair for the work-life balance.

I have been working at CEB full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

Everyone in the practice was very friendly and happy. There was generally a lot of freedom and not too much micromanagement. All of the mangers were very open and easy to talk to making it a very comfortable work environment. There were work parties, events and volunteer opportunities that really brought the company and practices together.

    Cons

Not a lot of cons but the pay was relatively low for the DC area.

I have been working at CEB full-time (less than an year)

    Pros

The office culture is one of the biggest pros at CEB. The young, fast-paced environment makes CEB a very exciting & fun place to work. Another major pro is that there are a lot of upward and lateral mobility opportunities, allowing its employees to move around the company and try new things.

    Cons

For the DC area, the entry-level jobs seem a bit lower than the average, but there are many great benefits that help undercut this con.

Good for learning and exposure to executives in the world's best companies. Bad for career progression and meritocracy

I have been working at CEB (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Learning what the best companies do and teaching it to CXO level execs and their teams
Friendly culture with a collaborative environment
Hours of work are long but can be flexible

    Cons

You won't progress in your career unless you're in the boys club: the inner circle of those who have been at CEB for 10+years and know how to influence those who subjectively decide who gets promoted. By simply working smart and hard you will not get recognition in the form of career progression -even if you ask or even fight for it.
Expect workload to be added to you without consideration of current capacity, and having to constantly defend the boundaries of how much you can achieve effectively and how much you can learn in a short space of time -without eating into your weekends and evenings.
Pay is not great for the hours worked

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Offer career progression based on merit, client impact and enterprise contribution, don't wait until someone is so fed up with trying to get a promotion that they are ready to walk to finally recognize them
Offer more opportunities for research staff to get involved in client conversations, sometimes more effectively than advisory depending on the subject and type of issue being discussed
Better guidance could be provided to new hires on how to navigate CEB - not doing this puts new joiners at a disadvantage compared to others who have acquired this through time at CEB but could have simply learned about through effective onboarding

Good for Early Career, Not a Place You Stay

I have been working at CEB full-time

    Pros

I've gotten what I wanted out of my experience at CEB, which when I first started, was essentially to learn more about business/strategy. I really love the people I work with-- everyone is smart, and comes from really diverse backgrounds which makes for great conversation. Also, early on in my career I had a couple of great managers but of course a con is that you get moved around a lot and I think good managers are rare at this company.

    Cons

    - Low pay. If you're in research, which is supposedly the "backbone" of the company don't expect to be rewarded for this. Compared to industry standards, CEB pays its employees very poorly. This is simply part of its strategy-- it can hire cheap, inexperienced college students any time for research positions and training costs are low. So, they don't really care at all.
    - Research experience is not "creative" as they describe. The research process at CEB can be taxing. As a researcher you're told to go think "out of the box" but ultimately decisions on research are made by the advisory side or your research manager. If your ideas don't mesh with the ideas of senior leadership in the company, you won't move up in the company.
    - No recognition. There's hardly any recognition of people in research roles. You pretty much have to move into advisory for people to notice you, otherwise you leave the company.
    - Limited Opportunity. There are three career paths at CEB-- sales, research and advisory. Again, research is limited-- they can't have too many senior managers in research positions because it's not profitable enough. While advisory okay, it's definitely not everyone's thing. In advisory, you eventually have to go on roadshows, present research, etc.
    - No brand image: CEB never branded itself in early years! For some reason the CEO didn't believe it was important. It's never going to the get the recognition that companies like Deloitte, Accenture, etc. get so don't be surprised when people ask you if it's a made-up company.
    - Limited resources: Sure, CEB might have a gym but there are basic things the company fails to provide its employees, which in turn, makes it harder for them to do their jobs. For instance, more experienced professionals don't have access to a laptop. Also, many calls rooms have been transformed into offices.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Invest in your people. High turnover has a really negative impact on the people that stay at CEB.

    Pros

Ok work life balance, products are reputable.

    Cons

Pervasive frat culture, poor leadership, poor career development, salary is not competitive

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Pay good talent more, and do more to develop them. Otherwise, if they are good talent, they will quickly discover how much more they can make elsewhere.

I have been working at CEB full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

CEB has a great office culture and work-life balance. Compared to some of its competitors, CEB employees work better hours and have better work-life balance. The office culture is very flat and not hierarchical: everyone is very tolerant of diverse ideas and junior employees are encouraged to speak up in meetings or to challenge (intellectually) their managers and higher-ups. The typical CEB Research Analyst has often been described as "intellectual and nice" and this is an apt description. As CEB recruits many campus hires, its culture is very young, making it a great place for new grads to start their career. In addition, as a research job, recent graduates with a liberal arts background but interested in business will find CEB's RA position to be very fitting to both their skill set and ambition. CEB acknowledges the relative inexperience of many of its hires and therefore takes care to train its young employees in both job-related and broader professional skills.

    Cons

For the work that the typical Research Analyst does, compensation could be higher. This seems to be a point of contention among many of my peers and fellow new hires. Partly because of the compensation, but not entirely because of it, CEB sees a LOT of turnover among its recent hires. Many newly hired Research Analysts stay at the company for a year or so, and move on to other firms.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Make your research analyst level hires feel more valued (either through pay or other means) and you will probably see less turnover.

I have been working at CEB full-time (less than an year)

    Pros

CEB has a great company culture and this permeates everything they do. They research how the best companies in the world are solving business problems then educate other companies on how to apply the solutions back to their own company. As a result, CEB is a company that is run according to best practices.

They intentionally hire people who are genuine and smart. Everyone is willing to help out and teach you how to be better.

The sales environment is competitive but not against your peers. You try to reach your goal and everyone is excited when you do and willing to help you improve your skills to be even better.

They have great benefits and want their employees to stay and succeed. They also promote heavily from within.

Their training program is very structured and time tested and managers do a great job coaching.

    Cons

At the end of the day, selling is hard. Not everyone is good at it. There is definitely pressure to meet you goals, but everyone wants to help you do it.

The entry level position is heavily focused on cold calling. It can be tedious at times.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Great job and keep improving the training programs.
