Management run people off, don't care, have no clue

Senior Geophysicist (Current Employee)
Houston, TX

I have been working at CGG full-time for more than 8 years

ProsOk if you are brand new to processing

ConsManagement are clueless - have no idea what is going on or how people feel. Horrible culture. Management only care about themselves. Overall not worth sticking around. Free food and activities don't make up for lack of leadership.

Advice to Senior ManagementGet out of your office and talk to to people for a change. Don't be so arrogant and uncaring.

No, I would not recommend this company to a friend – I'm not optimistic about the outlook for this company

Geophysicist

Processing Geophysicist (Former Employee)
Houston, TX

I worked at CGG full-time for more than 3 years

Pros.near China town, easy to find cheap food near the office

Cons.load of work, usually people work more than 10 hours a day plus weekends.
.old East Germany spy network, someone is watching every move you make. eg. number of washing breaks, how long was daily lunch break you take and when did you come to and leave from work etc. You get rewarded for reporting someone who is late for work.
.Houston version of Foxconn.

Advice to Senior ManagementA lot of the managers have violate labor law in CGGVeritas. eg. Many managers threaten to fire people if they don't work long overtime days after days. I am surprised no one has reported the poor work condition to Department of Labor.

Dont expect any thing or stay away from calgary center.

Seismic Processor (Former Employee)
Calgary, AB (Canada)

I worked at CGG full-time for more than a year

Pros1. CGG often hire electrical engineer for seismic signal processing. HR put a good show about company at University career fair at Saskatchwan. As fresh out of school with Master degree pay is decent.
2.Free breakfast, good benefit, fridays specials for breakfast.
3.Big name in seismic imaging.
4.High attrition rate which gives other ample opportunity to grow.
5.If you worked in Apple store say it in your interview. Asian head boss is apple ardent fan.
6. Good place if you can work at Houston office.

Cons1.Chinese boss wont give good treatment to others.
2.Not a Multicultural place, work place is dominated by Asians (75%). They even take questions in Mandarin in meetings which is not very professional.
3.Longer you stay after your work hour more bonus you can get.
4.HR is not honest and straight with employees. They laid me off in 13 month saying its a business related decision to cut down cost and start hiring new people next day.I consider myself smart guy looking at my engineering degree, so its hard for me to understand reason for laying me off. So dont get in shock if the call you in their office and fire you without any warning. They did this many times before too. In 2008 they let go whole HR department, CGG is famous for hire and fire.
5.Lot of Favouritism.
6. My review is based on my experience at calgary office. I heard houston office doesnot get involve in calgary office day to day work. so I cant really talk about other centers.

Advice to Senior Management1.Management in calgary need a change.
2.Remove all top tier bosses in calgary
3.Make it more Multicultural.
4.Retain talent

Old school, incompetent HR and the VERITAS legacy Queens

Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)
Calgary, AB (Canada)

I worked at CGG full-time for more than 3 years

ProsDecent salary, yearly increases, RRSP matching program

ConsOld school, too set in their ways to be even remotely progressive. Cliques of old timers run the show (male and female), HR lacks experience and initiative. If the old timers (female) don't like you then you are gone. Toxic environment and extremely poor management.

Advice to Senior ManagementCentralize management in Canada. Reporting into Houston is ineffective. Implement an intensive change management program. Remove the "old timers" that can't cope with change. Their old ways are not the best ways!

Worst company @ CALGARY

Senior Geophysicist (Former Employee)
Calgary, AB (Canada)

I worked at CGG full-time for less than a year

ProsGood career opportunities as lot of people leave this company in short time. so lot of vacant positions all along the company.
Good starting pay for fresh grad.
Great gym in the same building of calgary office and you can pay from your benefits.

ConsI joined this company when moved from saudi aramco with 20 year of processing experience. They kep me for 3-5 months and let me go. I moved with my family to a new country and after few month they realise I am not good enough, Reason I question too much. They need people who can keep their head down and work.
You are slave to management. New ideas are always disregarded.

Senior people dont get much respect they can fire you any time
.
Chinese management at Calgary is making this company unbearable to work. They let young bright people go easily too They are not realising the reputation of company in market. HR Department which is pretty new need to understand the emotions when they let people go. They use to have great HR people till 2010 untill every one end up resigning.
Now HR people only listen to management and they gossip around a lot.

I have seen people who currently work there gives better review. Will not be surprise if there is mail internally to wrote good reviews about company. Overall if u can get some thing else work there but not at CGG.

Advice to Senior ManagementThere are better companies out there which respect employees can always move. And, your management in calgary had burn many bridges in the past. Try make up for these before its too late. I hope people from Houston can read this as they are unaware of calgary management.

STAY AWAY Calgary, AB office

Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)

I worked at CGG

ProsYou get to wear jeans

ConsPeople are constantly gossiping
To many relationships in the office and that causes a lot of drama
HR Department is useless, and you can't talk to anyone without it getting around
False Promises
No room to grow (even if they tell you there is)
No one wants to teach you
A lot of Favortism
Its who you know, not what you know
Lots of Turnover

Advice to Senior ManagementTreat your employees better, stop making promises you can't keep, back up your team, and involve everyone in the office when it comes to social settings. This is a place of buisness not High School there shouldnt be a "cool group"

Worked like a slave. A few good features but overall glad I left - far better quality of life now.

Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)

I worked at CGG full-time for more than 10 years

ProsInteresting life-style. Worked in some interesting locations with some great people. Good pension scheme and excellent health insurance. Salary good if you are living in a country where you get tax free status and paid in your home country currency (not dependent on fluctuating exchange rates).

ConsTreated unfairly. A lot of favouritism and cliques. Favourites and friends are promoted as they are given perfect reviews by their management friends, even when they are far from being the best candidate for the job. Having to work long 12-13 hour shifts with no breaks. Company expanded too fast and decimated work teams causing great damage to morale. Over-worked. Company uses too many inexperienced contractors that have to be trained - nice for the contractor - (free training), but awful for the employee. This company is bad for your health.

Advice to Senior ManagementTreat ALL your staff with respect, listen to their concerns and respond to them honestly. The last company wide confidential review was not taken seriously and most of the concerns, which many employees addressed, were ignored. Recognize that stress due to over work is a hazard. Genuinely put health and safety first - (not just on the glossy front page, but really first!). Too many inexperienced people being promoted when they are not fit for the role.
