Not a good place to work folks

Senior Consultant (Former Employee)
Herndon, VA

I worked at CGI Group as a contractor for more than a year

ProsNothing I can tell much about, I worked as a contractor for 2 years

ConsHorrible managers and the treatment to contractors is one of the worst that I have encountered in my 13 years of IT experience.

Advice to Senior ManagementIf you can't manage please take some courses

– I'm not optimistic about the outlook for this company

Senior Consultant

Senior Consultant (Former Employee)
Fairfax, VA

I worked at CGI Group full-time for more than a year

ProsGreat coworkers. Free soda / vending machines. Flexible (for a time) on the ability to work from home.

Cons- Poor planning and adherence to SDLC best practices. I was on a very high profile project, with intense demands, yet no true project plan or standardized procedures were ever followed, despite being CMMI level 4.

- Extremely convoluted management structure. I received direction from approximately 15 different managers at different levels, often receiving conflicting orders. There was a reorganization of the project 4 times, each time making things more chaotic.

- Lack of communication from management and between teams. The project was very siloed, resulting in teams often coming to different conclusions or creating duplicative work. As the project began to tank, management kept employees less and less informed.

- Poor scope management. Consistently agreed to client requests, without properly analyzing the affect on time and schedule.

- Extremely long hours. Consistently worked 60-80 hour weeks. There was a prison-like atmosphere near the end of the project, where management refused to let employees leave, and held teams in conference rooms for strict, 11 hour shifts while taking attendance.

Advice to Senior ManagementCome up with a dedicated plan and strict processes before attempting to work on large, federal projects.

Worst company on the planet

Software Developer (Current Employee)
Washington, DC

I have been working at CGI Group full-time for more than a year

ProsI would say there are not any Pros.

ConsYou can't reach your folks. They don't respond to mail, voice messages. They won't live up to their words, despite you fulfill your commitment and demonstrate that over and over.

Advice to Senior ManagementFire your management if they don't respond to employees and others mails and voice messages. You need a major rehaul from top to bottom especially at Managers and Directors level in DC metro area. They screwed up big time as we all know. And I see that they continue to do it every single day.

I'm glad someone brought it up!

Project Manager (Current Employee)
Fairfax, VA

I have been working at CGI Group as a contractor for less than a year

ProsThe people at CGI Federal in general are amazing individuals. I approve of the folks I work with every single day.

ConsThe company philosophy is very strange. We are all required to "sell" and some of us don't even have a commission plan. Everyday I hear the three directors I report to complain about having to enter meetings with clients and these guys are not sales people either. Very strange.

Advice to Senior ManagementDon't you have sales people?

Worst place to work if you are in professional business development

Director (Former Employee)
Fairfax, VA

I worked at CGI Group full-time for more than a year

ProsNice products and solutions but that is about it.

ConsPoor commission plan that even when you sell two or three deals, they find ways not to pay you. I've never seen a more subjective commission plan in my entire life in business development. If you expect to make anything comparable to other BD opportunities, stay away!! Business Unit managers find numerous ways to not pay. The in-fighting among BU managers is absolutely terrible. 11 Business Development professionals either left or were fired. The ones who were fired weren't because of their poor performance but because of the lack of Senior management and executive oversight. Some BD professionals were fired within 15 months of employment. In the Federal world it takes that long just to get something going. The hands off mentality and no guidance is absolutely terrible. The biggest problem is the absolutely LACK of cohesion. BU managers lying and cheating each other and most of all their employees. Directors get the shaft most of the time and the VP's mostly get promoted because they've been there a long time or because of nepotism. NOT because of quality and actually winning deals. Absolutely the worst company to be paid by. Just look on the street to see how many "X" CGI business developers there are.

Advice to Senior ManagementLearn what REAL business development is. Socialistic BS doesn't work when you want to actually win deals. What the heck is wrong with you people!?!

Worst Company I have ever Worked for.........

Director (Current Employee)
Fairfax, VA

I have been working at CGI Group full-time

ProsNothing much to say here. Infighting, poor management, favortism and nepotism, I could go on and on and on..

ConsWorst place I have ever worked in an almost 40 year working career. Cultural misalignment between US and French Canadian entities-- socialistic philosophies DO NOT work in the US. VERY poor leadership- the fish sticks from the head down. Extremely bad decision to buy a large, failing European company. Can't wait to leave!!

Advice to Senior ManagementI am beyond words. They would not listen anyway.

Racial Discrimination in some projects

Consultant (Former Employee)
Fairfax, VA

I worked at CGI Group full-time for more than a year

ProsNice company for start ups those are from college directly.

ConsIf your manager wants to replace you due to discrimination , then they will ask you for resignation. If you don't, then they will send you to special program and they will make sure you will fail it, eventually they will terminate you in 30 days. So when you asked to resign, then just resign. Do not fight with any one.
You should be ready any time to get another job. They advertise that they do not have any lay-offs in order to get good share price. But they will terminate you silently with out any severance. You should have more time, money and other resources to go to a law suit.
Please do not join if you have experience of 5+ years. and be ready for all those things said above.

Advice to Senior ManagementPlease investigate the thoroughly when some one sent to special program. It may be due to racism discrimination and do justice to the particular employee.

CGI Federal: An Insult to Human Intelligence

IT Consultant (Current Employee)
Fairfax, VA

I have been working at CGI Group full-time for less than a year

Pros-great if you want to be a mindless drone
-awesome salary if you want to live in a cardboard box
-great environment for doing nothing
-internal "cult-like" promotion of the company ("one of us")

Cons-ignorant management
-hands-off work force and administration
-insult to employees with drive for innovation and progressive work styles
-no management fast track

Advice to Senior ManagementFind something for your employees to do rather than let them sit and do nothing for weeks on end. Companies like this will be the end of IT innovation and progress in the public sector.

Company in decline

Technical Consultant (Current Employee)
Fairfax, VA

I have been working at CGI Group full-time for more than a year

ProsEasy to work from home
Good dental insurance
Free soda on the 4th floor

ConsCareer growth is non-existent; forget about working your way up; if you're not from the outside, you'll spend 5 years without getting a promotion
No bonuses; just profit-sharing which management takes the vast majority of and leaves nothing but scraps for the little people
Company has consistently gotten cheaper; first benefits, now people don't even have cubes
Management seeks to isolate itself from the peons
Long hours with no overtime; comp time is capped and flex time can't be used realistically
Raises are pathetic
Hiring standards have gotten worse; they'll hire anyone

Advice to Senior ManagementStop isolating yourself from your employees and take action; the longer you do nothing, the harder it'll be fix things once they've finally broken

Advice to Senior ManagementHave regular town hall meetings to gather employee feedback on the company and its practices.
