    Values Proposals over Delivery

Anonymous Employee (Former Employee) Herndon, VA

ProsThere are still a few good technical people left. Convenient work locations.

ConsThe best people eventually went elsewhere. Winning a contract seems to be valued more than strong delivery. Nobody pushed back on the customer, which caused severe hardship on the technical staff and a system that did not work.

Advice to Senior ManagementPlease provide a technical career track for those who keep up with best practices in architecture, design, and implementation.

    Good money, MEH employer

Anonymous Employee (Current Employee) Washington, DC

ProsGood salary for my position, corporate profit sharing and benefits are good. I split work between 50% home / 50% in suburban location based on my activity. Large company trying to do well for upper tier employees that are not direct bill to clients. Very international flavor, as French Canadian HQ with large US and European operations.

ConsLower tier employees treated like Kleenex; used and then disposed of. I see lots of new grad's used hard while probably being paid at very low end of spectrum. This is typical of Services company which needs to sell staff cheaply to maintain corporate margins. Staff are quickly cut when then are not billable. My experience is they have very inconsistent personnel quality in sales & business development.

Very distinct left wing political atmosphere.

Work swings widely between extreme overload and nothing. Work forty days straight, then not anything new for two weeks. In almost to years there, I have never had my manager stop by and talk with me one-on-one about anything. Contacts have been 10 word email instructions to engage someone on a task and a 10 minute mandatory annual review. In my group, no sense of team or bond. leading to lots of hiding when work is passed out.

Advice to Senior ManagementInternal disorganization and political empire building are costing contracts and business. Stop relying so heavily on political cronies for US Federal business. You have the most incompetent IT department I've seen in 25+ years in IT.

Very dependent on project you are working on

Senior Consultant (Current Employee) Fairfax, VA

ProsOne project I worked on was very good with excellent people, great teamwork, and high morale even under extreme pressure. Everyone pulled together, good sharing of knowledge, and everyone worked hard to get the job done under extremely challenging conditions. Company worked hard to compensate for long hours by providing free lunches/dinners, and some extra compensation for long hours.

ConsA second project was the exact reverse of the first project. Claimed that schedule was tight, but often times when someone completed a task the technical lead had no new task to give them. One of several signs of extreme disorganization. This caused low morale, and several people leaving within a short period of time. Seemed to be split by new members of the project versus people who had been on the project for quite some time. New members often were not tasked well, and were not given enough chance to understand the business functions. Technical lead bad-mouthed some new members to others on the project, which got back to new members making them feel unappreciated and not being given proper chance. Management seemed not to care about this as long as work was getting done.

    Sacrifices Pay for Flexibility

    Consultant (Current Employee) Fairfax, VA

ProsFlexibility, Working from home, Work-Life Balance, Good first and third job in a career.

ConsRaises/bonuses are not great, Some people who work more and do better work are often paid the same as people who do less work and are lazy.

Advice to Senior ManagementPay good workers more money if you want them to stay with the company.

    Smart people, not always available

    Consultant (Current Employee) Fairfax, VA

ProsVery intelligent coders, smart agile shop, good flex hours comp time benefits. Interesting projects when you get to work on them. Good flexibility to be reassigned to new projects.

ConsWork from home days leave people unavailable lack of assigned work for new hires. Lack of direction on some projects it varies from project to project. Lack of meaningful job training.

Advice to Senior ManagementBetter specific job training for higher ups. Make more time for them to train new employees, especially coders.

Roller coaster ride....always on the edge of your seat.

Project Manager (Current Employee) Fairfax, VA

ProsHigh visibility projects using cutting edge technology which push the envelope of their functionality.

ConsCompany focuses too much on account management and not project management. Those who win the contract are not always the right people to run the project.

Advice to Senior ManagementUnderstand there is a big difference between account management and project management. Use experienced program/project managers to run the project and grow it organically...use account managers to run the business unit account and focus on new project business development. Use project lessons learned to benefit future projects. Value individual member contributions to the big picture.

Ok - Typical federal government IT Shop

Manager Consulting (Current Employee) Herndon, VA

ProsSalary and ok benefits, Location, Steady job.

ConsTypical Federal contracting job. Mediocre talent.. Too many managers... Lack of opportunities.. Brand affected by health exchange fiasco at Federal and State levels.

Advice to Senior ManagementIf you want to grow business, focus on hiring the right tech talent. Having too many incompetent managers in charge of prestigious projects, and hiring incompetent people is not the way to be successful
