    Pros

Good benefits once you have been there for a few years. UBM recognized the time we had already accumulated with the company when it was acquired by them in 2003. Many of us had 10+ years with the company and were immediately fully vested in the benefits offered.

    Cons

The upper management of the division is clueless right up to the CEO. They only takes direction from the home office in London. They didn't make an effort to get to know the people that work under them in the USA or learn about the markets we services. One bad strategic decision after another. Sold off or closed many viable entities to put efforts into projects like SeachMedica - a search engine for healthcare professionals. Ever hear of Google? Is that really who you want to compete with?

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Take an active interest in knowing what your employees do and the markets they know. While we are in a global network/economy, figure out how the USA niche can turn a profit here and expand upon it rather then shut it down because "London says so". Then incorporate into the global plans of UBM

The Worst 9 Months of My Life

    Pros

Some nice, really smart people. Good location. Well-read co-workers. Some fun lunches out (pre-recession). Big company with decent benefits. OK about vacation time.

    Cons

Honestly, I don't know how l lasted so long here. The first round of layoffs came 3 months after I started and that should have been a warning sign. People who had been there 20 years were just dumped. Some people who showed up before 8 and stayed until past 7pm were let go, but others who came in at 11am and left at 5pm were kept. Made no sense. The whole vibe was kind of one that was outdated and there was an acceptance of screaming as a tactic to motivate people. I honestly have never heard yelling like that in an office before. Management was at best inept, and at worse, cruel. It cured me of ever wanting to work in publishing again.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Try to at least pretend like you care about your employees. If you have to lay them off, at least don't humiliate them in the process. Figure out who does the actual work, before you do the layoffs.

Do NOT work for this company unless you enjoy frustration, and banging your head against walls

    Pros

If you cant find another job, then perhaps, but only then

    Cons

My career has actually regressed since working at CMP, and I am paid less than i was 5 years ago, if you factor in cost of living.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Let people do the jobs they are paid to do, and not everyone elses.
too many people make decisions that are irrelevant to their jobs, and hinder
others from doing their jobs well.

    Pros

If you want to learn how badly an employee can be treated, then CMP is the place for you! Also a great experiance if you want to know how it feels to have others take credit for your work. If you want to learn how to throw journalistic integrity out the window and opperate with no scrupples, CMP is a great place to learn!

    Cons

Arrogent and uncaring managment. Slave-driving attitude. Workers are constantly belittled. Machavellian tactics are always used. Managment constanly lies! Loyalty to the company is rewarded by termination. The company firmly believes in the axiom "penny smart and pound foolish". Upper managment and execs are rewarding themselves for a job poorly done and are thankless to those who actually do the work.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Replace yourselves with competent individuals!

    What a Joke!

    Pros

Good benefits and casual work environment.

    Cons

Unbelievably unorganized company. "Management" in HR Dept. is a joke and puts more emphasis on quotas than the actual quality of the employees. Hated going to work every day. If you want job growth, challenges and people that respect you don't work for CMP.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Stop mico-managing and get organized. You'll never make it with the big boys in Publishing until your company grows up. The employees that you hire are sub-par at best and you're hiring people for the wrong reasons.
