I have been working at CSX full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Good pay, relocation potential, promotion opportunities, job security and a PENSION

    Cons

The executive leadership level band 7 and above are not diverse enough to effect culture change within the rank and file

    Advice to Management

Stop relocating trainee employees to locations they dont want to live. Continue to seek diversity and effeciency

I have been working at CSX full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Handsome salary. Fast-paced job. No two days are the same. VERY responsible position. You will get creative and use your critical thinking skills on this job! Generous time off (when you have the time and seniority accrued). Indoor, in a temperature-controlled environment (you're out of the elements).

    Cons

Ever-changing schedule and shift-work for newer employees (and those with low seniority) - evenings, nights, weekends, and holidays. Stressful job - comparable to an air-traffic-controller, but still much different. Have had many former ATC's claim that there are significantly more variables to consider when compared with train dispatching: fuel, tonnage, train length, outside temperature, track conditions, speed restrictions, signal and grade crossing issues, hours of service, physical characteristics, track maintenance and congestion, too many trains on line-of-road to be adequately handled, and no room in the respective rail yards, until other trains depart ahead. Some have left to pursue ATC. Others (non-ATC) have left to pursue other opportunities (internal and external). This job is not for everyone.

    Advice to Management

Operations managers who have never worked in this capacity in "real-time," often have very different ideas of how the job should work, and what we really do. Some of the consoles are SO overloaded (in the interest of cost-savings, and saving on manpower), that you will never be able to truly keep up with the job. You just have to go in knowing that you're going to do your best and hope that you can hand off the railroad to the next shift in better condition than you received it. We get paid to move freight, as efficiently and safely as possible. Nothing more, nothing less. It is what it is.

    Pros

    Pay, benefits, hard working people

    Cons

    Work/life balance don't really exists

    Advice to Management

HR has to stand up to leadership and stop trying to be "liked" by the senior leadership. Work to make it an inclusive environment for diversity. Stop making knee jerk decision, fix work life balance issue, performance mgmt time is a joke and pencil whipping time because no real thought behind the scores. Promote good people or you'll lose them.

    Pros

Work life balance is good for positions not in the field locations. (Feel a bit sorry for them though) Many opportunities to make a difference on projects. Leadership is approachable. Work culture is good.

    Cons

Base salary is a bit lower than some industries with the same jobs. (Could be due to Jacksonville market) It's easier for an individual to leave their current team and get a promotion than be promoted in their current position even when exceeding expectations.

    Advice to Management

Consider changing the promotion process with HR. Managers should have power over their own teams and positions, they know who they need and who they want to promote based on performance, don't hinder that.
