There's the right way, the wrong way, and the Cabela's way that will require way more work than needed to get results.

I have been working at Cabela's part-time (less than an year)

    Pros

The coworkers were very fun to work with, and learned tons of new things from them. The benefits aren't bad, and the pay is alright. Get to play with guns all day if you work for the gun counter. The actual job is very enjoyable. Great place to shop, and a great family environment.

    Cons

There's not a lot of full time positions available. You will hear the phrase "Club Visa" so much that you start to hear it in your sleep. Management will micromanage the crap out of you, and you will always be under-appreciated. There is a very high turnover in all the departments. Senior management will be quick to point out where you mess up, but won't acknowledge their screw ups. You will also be told that you are expendable, and that there are hundreds of people waiting to take your job.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Quit micromanaging the employees. Some of us really do enjoy doing the job, but dogging people into hating their lives is not the way to keep employees for very long. Also, the processes that are required doing certain jobs is way over complicated.

I worked at Cabela's full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

    Great co-workers on the floor...

    Cons

Dreadful management team in Thornton, CO
Lifting/Moving thousands of pounds of freight by hand daily
Constantly tasking instead of assisting customers
Pressured to force Club Card Visa onto the unsuspecting
Miserable hours and pay (even for retail)
Watching the staff revolving door spin (I've never seen so many leave without even giving notice)

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Take a serious look at how coaches treat players in the NFL... They don't dwell on the past or the negative, instead focusing on support and encouragement. Maybe you'd keep your people more than six to eight months before they quit on you... Oh, a decent salary system would be nice too.

But you won't, you're corporate... And you won't change, it's just all about the bottom line.

Current Employee - Floor Outfitter (Seasonal) in Rogers, AR

I have been working at Cabela's part-time (less than an year)

    Pros

The people I work with (save for a handful) are amazingly sweet and try to make my time as a seasonal worthwhile and the pay is nice. Decent commission when doing kiosk sales, and contests to win gift cards and items at the lowest price are nice. 25% discount on most items as a first year employee are nice as well. Most customers are understanding of outfitters who don't run cash registers often, and sometimes even offer to find managers if none respond on the radio to a call.

    Cons

Leadership is crap, to be honest. Some managers just sit in the break room and watch football, some floor leads will ask you to work another department and then get mad at you when you look like you're not busy (but in reality you'd JUST gotten finished with a group and had to take a breather), leads don't encourage teamwork and attempt to split people up, some managers disrespect and demean their employees. It also doesn't help when scheduling is wonky and instead of two people to one section to close, there's two people to four sections.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Learn that we're adults, not some children in a daycare. Hire more competent managers who're willing to work with outfitters, and teach the leads that sometimes working together on things gets them done faster and cleaner. Try and watch the outfitters as well and make sure they're taking breaks and lunches, and help cover for them if they're the only ones in their section.

Former Employee - Gun Counter Outfitter in Scarborough, ME

I worked at Cabela's part-time (more than an year)

    Pros

Meeting and helping people interested in the outdoors. Employee discount. Most of the other outfitters were good people to work with.

    Cons

Being forced to hawk credit cards to customers and receiving very little compensation for our efforts. Anyone who isn't management is expendable, replaceable. Management at the store I worked at was mired in hubris; thought they were smarter than the outfitters that worked the front line everyday. I had issues with my legs (multiple surgeries) and asked for mats behind the gun counter and nothing was ever done.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Stop being so paranoid in regards to your outfitters. Listen to what Gun Counter Outfitters say in regards to customers they find suspicious. These outfitters take pride in their work. Pride is all they have, because pay isn't commensurate to the knowledge and customer service some give. I am amazed how some poor employees are still there while amazing outfitters have been fired because the Quarterly Report looks better when there are less people on the payroll. The way Cabela's hires and fires was getting ridiculous when I left.

    I worked at Cabela's full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

It's a job. The discount, if you last long enough. You will learn a ton. It will look super fine on your resume.

    Cons

The "culture" they beat into your head is a joke! Some of the issues they have experienced are retail 101, yet they struggle so hard to find solutions. You best be ready to be lied to! Pay stinks. Even if you are the most qualified, NO chance for advancement unless your "in someone's circle." You must think as they think, act as they act. There is no room for that breath of fresh are type of employee.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Keep up on your list's of people shredding the rules. GET THEM OUT. As a manager you cannot have "friends" in the store...so favoritism cannot show it's ugly head. Honesty sometimes is painful...don't pull any punches....tell the truth.

First 10 months awesome, next 8 awful

    Current Employee - Anonymous Employee
    Current Employee - Anonymous Employee

I have been working at Cabela's (more than an year)

    Pros

Access to 3.5 and significant discounts through 3 Point 5

    Cons

Cabela's has loaded itself with "retail specialists", primarily Lowe's and Home Depot people, not the outdoor enthusiast that Cabela's was previously built on. We do not carry rakes and bagged dirt, or 2x4's! We are an outdoor experience, guns, fishing, camping and hunting. Cabela's set the bar high for what is referred to as "Legendary Customer Service", but sadly that is a thing of the past. We have three primary service areas, the front end which is customer service and cashiers; Hardlines, which is fishing, optics, ammo and gun library; and Softlines which is camping, outdoor cooking, Logo, shoes and clothing of any kind. They have gone from three to six Outfitters staffing the floor during open hours to one or two. They have changed hours and Job descriptions in this store that do not match what Corporate advertises and says they are. If there is a problem, too bad. Attitudes and moral are below low. Pay scale is below what the Corporation says.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Hire employees that know Michigan's weather, fishing, camping and hunting seasons, ordering our stock, then deliver it to us when we need it, leaving it on the shelves in the store until the season has ended, and we will sell it. Provided a schedule of hours to work the floor, or hire stock people again the work freight, we can't do both at the same time. Stop worrying about Managerial Bonus and Executive Bonus, and focus on what this Company used to do, give real customer service. The experience of shopping at Cabela's is what brought people in, give it to them and they spend more. Please stop copying other companies products and charging more, not less for them. Actually know the geographical area you have expanded to. We are not at the Birch Run exit and do not have that amount traffic from I75 pulling into our parking lot. No one but locals can find the location where we are at, and it has severely effected our bottom line. Get billboards on I-75 that actually give our location, not just listing two cross roads, which no one out of the area can spell let alone find. Stop your expansion plan until you can fix your warehousing issues, and get us the stock we need to stay in business, instead of diverting everything to the Grand Openings and leaving our shelves empty.

    HR sucks

I have been working at Cabela's

    Pros

discounts are ok and 3 point 5 is pretty awesome. most of the employees are great to work with.

    Cons

HR needs a complete overhaul from the bottom up. the senior leadership within the corporation has no clue what the stores do, nor do most of them par take in any of the activities that the store sells, therefore failing in their sales and operations plans for the company as a whole.

I worked at Cabela's part-time (less than an year)

    Pros

Discount on sporting goods. Great customers to work with.

    Cons

Over bearing supervisors that love to criticize you in front of other employees. The customer is never wrong - it will be your fault.
Lots of promises when you apply that are soon forgotten when you are hired, or the policy is changed.
A lot of talk about high values and great work culture - it's just talk.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Get some personnel management training for managers. Also, screen management applicants more thoroughly.

    Cons

New business mindset, poor communication, too much "behind the curtain"

Specifically in the store, needs to operate as a Cabela's, rather than being ran like a Sam's Club

    Pros

Employee merchandise discount. A lot of cool stuff, but high prices.

    Cons

Horrible work/personal life balance. Huge turnover in retail store..........insane drama! Antiquated inventory distribution processes and systems. Aggressive growth strategy, but need to upgrade systems before.....they're putting the cart before the horse. Fully entrenched in corporate america now as they treat outfitters like numbers.............just look at the re-organization they did in first quarter 2014.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Upgrade the inventory management and distribution systems and processes now before you get too big.
