    I have been working at Cabela's part-time (more than an year)

    Pros

    Effective and efficient training is provided. Continuing training keeps us up to date on new rules and regulations. Product training is provided by the manufacturers reps. Vacation pay is provided for part time employees also.

    Cons

    We are expected to present the Cabela's Club Visa Credit Card to every customer we interact with. Many conversations do not easily afford that opportunity without feeling awkward.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Be more consistent in praising and rewarding outfitters who receive compliments from customers.

    Unique leadership development opportunities; Variety of experience (Merchandising, Marketing, Retail, Strategy, Operations); Family values in a founder company; small town values in Sidney, NE (Corporate Headquarters); intentional efforts made for talent management; excellent communication enterprise wide; wonderful co-workers; people love their jobs

    Company appears to be adding vertical layers at a rapid rate without justification of additional headcount; strategic planning is delayed, causing some delay in execution; capability maturity of project/change sponsorship is low in most areas - not so much a negative, but something to keep in mind when setting expectations

    Pros

    Supervisors are awesome! They are laid back and actually work while they are in the office, unlike some places I've worked. Its great for college people- between answering calls, you can read or do homework.

    Cons

    You don't really make connections with co-workers and hours can be hard to get if you're not there around Christmas time.

    I never really had a problem with management, I really enjoyed my time at Cabela's!

    I have been working at Cabela's part-time (less than an year)

    Pros

    Cabelas really cares about it's employees and customers in a way that I've never experienced before in retail! I've worked for a few retail companies and in the health care industry and have not seen the kind of kindness and professionalism that I've had at Cabelas. It was a downgrade for me in jobs and pay, so I was kind of embarrassed about working in retail at first. After my experiences at Cabelas I am proud to say I work there, and very happy to be an employee. Most companies are so concerned about making money, and I truly believe that Cabelas is more concerned about keeping customers happy because that's how they make money and keep loyal customers. There are very good incentives and discounts also!! All in all, I'm very excited about my job!!

    Cons

    Every job or any situation for that matter has cons, but so far at Cabelas, I have yet to be disappointed about anything.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Keep it up!! You're a great group of people always looking for ways to improve on the company and the experience of the customer and employees.

    Culture, Atmosphere, Customer engagement, and commitment to the employee

    Cons

    Very growth driven, without capital which leads to cutting expenses the wrong way. Merchandising is one size fits all concept. This must be addressed if continued growth in different climate zones is expected.

    Learn the talents of your people as individuals, and how they can contribute to the company as a whole. Listen to feedback and take action. Become more Localized in product assortment.

    Pros

    I really do love almost everything about working at Cabela's--the culture, the values, the time they invest in their employees with lots of potential, their employee recognition, the growth opportunities, etc. I have worked for them for a little over a year and I am about to get my third promotion which just shows if you really work hard you can get ahead in this company.

    Cons

    It's retail first and foremost. That means you work most weekends, you close, you work holidays, pay isn't really livable for a family unless you're in management, and sometimes some crappy managers or outfitters slip through the cracks.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Stop hiring people from outside the company. Walmart and Home Depot managers come in and want to change how WE do things and it's not abiding by our culture. Hire from within--WE have a lot of potential.
