A stifling environment that stunted my career growth

Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)
Bethpage, NY

I worked at Cablevision Systems full-time for more than 5 years

ProsFree cable/internet/phone. There are a handful of corporate discounts that employees receive.

ConsI worked in the Corporate IT department for over five years. If there is any culture at all in the company, it is a "you are nothing more than your job function" culture. There is little to no chance for advancement, and the ability to change positions is largely based on your current role, nothing more. Raises are hard to come by and are usually less than 3%. Compensation is based on "pay grades," and it is possible to reach the top of a pay grade and not receive future raises. Training is also only based on your current role, and you will not be approved for training outside your job function.

There is a clear cut hierarchy based on titles, and you are expected to respect or even fear a person's title. There are a lot of bad or poorly trained managers throughout the company.

Advice to Senior ManagementThe company is run poorly from the loud-mouth owner down to the lowliest intern. It feels less like a fortune 500 company and more like a utility. Employees would benefit from a little appreciation from time to time.

No, I would not recommend this company to a friend – I'm not optimistic about the outlook for this company

Minor leagues for the big networks

Broadcast (Former Employee)
Bethpage, NY

I worked at Cablevision Systems full-time for more than 3 years

ProsGenerous benefits, relaxed working environment, good teammates.

ConsLousy salaries, clueless management, long working hours, very difficult to move up.

Advice to Senior ManagementYour front line employees are some of the most talented in the business. Listen to them more and your middle managers less.

Glass ceiling, HR is worthless and often the bully

Telemarketing Sales (Former Employee)
Piscataway, NJ

I worked at Cablevision Systems full-time for more than 5 years

ProsThe medical Benefits, flexible schedules

ConsManagement, HR, union-buster attitude, high disposability (you don't really matter to them)

Advice to Senior ManagementStop fueling fires and confrontations between employees... Start caring bout what your staff knows and not what they're saying about one another. It's not our fault you all overhired and the company can't compare to FiOS. Every call isn't a sale stop pretending it is.

Complete lack of Direction, Poor Integration

Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)
Billings, MT

I have been working at Cablevision Systems full-time for more than 5 years

ProsPaycheck shows up on time, Free cable and Internet access, work is not very demanding at all.

ConsProjects cancelled all over the place, then reopened, then cancelled again. No direction from management. Communication between management layers is non existent. Very little chance for promotion. Anything involving managerial approval take 5 times as long as it would under normal circumstances.

Advice to Senior ManagementYou have some extremely talented internal people, but the structure of your company makes it impossible for them to help you. Do more to develop your internal talent, and trust them.

Hard to find positives after several years here

Direct Sales Representative (Current Employee)
Piscataway, NJ

I have been working at Cablevision Systems full-time for more than a year

ProsFree cable, phone and Internet. Good benefits program, facilities are maintained well.

ConsManagement is not trustworthy, makes promises then doesn't deliver. When you bring it up, you get scolded to the side. They are constantly decreasing compensation and changing it to benefit their bottom line, while trying to show us how it's better for us. It just never is. The management team is sensitive to any resistance by the employees, and the product is subpar. We don't have channels that are core to a cable provider and rely way too heavily on unmotivated contractors to execute work orders.

Advice to Senior ManagementGet employees to do the work, not contractors and stick to a pay plan. When you keep reducing the pay plan every few months, it just kills the morale. Stop telling us to go out and work on our days off while you guys are home and not taking our calls,

Very difficult to make sales with an average closing ratio of 7-10%

Sales Representative (Current Employee)
Oakland, NJ

I have been working at Cablevision Systems

ProsExcellent benefits that start a day one when your hired.

ConsWork day is from 12:00PM-9:00PM. Customers that you're trying to win back from FIOS, Direct-TV and DISH, really hate Cablevision and won't come back even if you gave the service for free. A lot of micro-management by your supervisor. You need a minimum of 7 triple win back sales per month or you're fired. Very few Reps are successful and are with the company for years.

Advice to Senior ManagementListen to what Reps are saying and act. Don't think you know everything, saying we have done this for years and we've been successful. Well...you could be more successful by listening to imput from various Reps.
