not pleasant. was disappointed to see how employees (management and non-exempt) are really treated.

Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)
New York, NY

I worked at Cablevision Systems

Prosemployees receive free cable, tv and internet

Cons-too much micromanaging, lack of trust of employees
-continuation training for existing employees (exempt/non-exempt) is minimal and really not in--depth so that one can learn and retain info. alot of computer based training which is not always --good. (can't remember everything)
-disciplinary policy is interesting. employees are put on epips (employee performance improvement plan warnings) for every little thing (usually in place fo 60 days). once employee off of plan and it sometimes questionable why the employee was placed on the plan, then the fact that the employee was even placed on this plan is still held against the employee for 18 months. So the employee can't win.
-so called annual increases are minimal compared to the amount of work employees are expected to do SInce management does not really get good management training on how to administer performance warnings or any disciplinary action, there are a lot of inconsistencies between the different offices with the same organization, between the different organizations. This is why Cablevision does not want the union (CWA or IBEW) to represent its members so they can get aways with placing employees on corrective action or also, dismissing employees even when the reasons associated for carrying out this action is questionable. Well, I heard that CWA has finally won the right to represent the Field Service Organization and next, they are coming after the call centers also. The employees definitely need this representation. This company is so strange that they even place large volumens of management employees on EPIPs also for not meeting a goal or not playing the political games. What company places their management (Supervisors, etc) and Non-Exempt employees on the same EPIP. How does Cablevision expect their management to have good morale amongst themselves and also, promote morale amongs employees when they are constantly under this type of threat and also, then have to place their employees on the same performance plan that they are on also. This is the strange corporate culture that is acceptable at this company.
- working there is like working in a cult. if you don't play along with the politics and join in with the in crowd, then you are treated differently
-management expects employees to work like robots. some of the requirements in how an employee is expected to do the job is the same reason why employees cant reach some of their goals . this applies for both exempt and non-exempt
- there are more cons than pros (too many to write about)

Advice to Senior ManagementGlad the Union is infiltrating Cablevision so now you may want to stop playing games with the employees' careers. The unprofessionalism and inconsentencies will now have to go away. CWA is not going to let this keep happening to its union employees.

Stop micromanaging and trust that the majority of employees want to do a great job but its hard to do so with the threats constantly hanging over their heads. Stop managing by intimidation. Bad morales does not improve good customer service and make for a good employee.

Cable Industry Mature Little Growth - STock tanking.

Account Executive (Former Employee)
Brooklyn, NY

I worked at Cablevision Systems

ProsA salary and 401K. A real learning experience to get an education.

ConsPoor leads. saturated maket, beg for orders, no real value add, a commodity. This results in poor compensation for efforts. Overlap in territory w other sales people. Very strong internal competition for same orders.

No milage paid or expenses. YOu pay it all out your pocket. Managers from old days when selling cable had no competition and had value. Very cheap company. Better off walking dogs for a living.

Advice to Senior ManagementChange comp plan for field. Get rid of management layers - too top heavy.

Senior managment does not have the confidence of the employees. They have a created an unfavorable work environment.

Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)
Yonkers, NY

I have been working at Cablevision Systems

ProsVery well known regionally in the Lower Hudson Valley. Also, broadcast/cablecast live news is an exciting work environment.

ConsThe very senior management has extremely poor people skills and fosters an environment that creates very bad morale among the staff. Most employees are not fans of this company or management. The attitude of the senior management is contrary to the achievement of the long-term goals of this company.

Advice to Senior ManagementGo to seminars that teach you how to foster a favorable work environment that allows employees to feel good about the company and the management team. Learn how to treat employees with the respec they deserve.

great workplace if you eat stress for breakfast

Customer Service Representative (Former Employee)
Shelton, CT

I worked at Cablevision Systems

Prosi liked the people i worked with. Everyone was friendly. The free cable package was entertaining with 400 channels to choose from. My location was easy to commute to. The management does a good job communicating important news to the reps.

Consthe entry level shift is terrible - you work a 10 hour shift fri - mon (tues - thurs off) so you work non-stop 4 days through the weekend. This ruins your personal life if your friends/family get together on weekends. You are stuck in this shift until you outperform 100+ other CSRs.

The call queue always has customers on hold, so you are on the phone literally all 10 hours with no other tasks to break up the monotany. there are only two 15 minute breaks & a lunch.

The company continuously harms customers with price increases & shifts of popular channels to more expensive packages. So the job is not really "customer service" instead the job is to be the punching bag for customers who are angry at how cablevision treats them.

The training is absurd. They train you on things you don't need to know (like manually calculating pro rates) but don't train you on things you need to know (like the jargon that describes field service calls)

combine these factors together & its not a satisfying job. Its just taking angry calls with no breaks & no personal life to de-stress.

Advice to Senior Managementnothing. cablevision runs a monopoly, & treats its customers & employees accordingly.

Filed Service Technician (Former Employee)
Hicksville, NY

I worked at Cablevision Systems

Prosgood benefits (everything on discounts to memberships), fellow employees are good to work with, recognition when given is great, overtime available,

Consmanagement puts tremendous pressure to do more work that is possible for one shift, expected to do overtime, management is very disrespectful if you do not do as they say (even if they are wrong)

A place full of politics and bias

Manager Customer Service (Former Employee)
Shelton, CT

I worked at Cablevision Systems

ProsThe benefits are great. Free cable. A lot of nice amenities on site such as cafeteria, gameroom, and use of gym run by landlord for a one time fee of $10

ConsPolitics. The onsite leader does not seem to care about the staff. He is more concerned about his status, and dos not realize that the hourly staff thinks his managers are worthless

Advice to Senior ManagementLet the site manager run the business and keep the morale high. The VP needs to believe he has the ability to know what happens in hes center, and is able to make decisions without interference from the SVP who is aloof.
